Book Description

December 24, 2008

C++ is one of the most used object-oriented languages and is used when speed and reliability are required. It is used for many system-level tasks, such as operating-system programming. For example, Windows and Linux include chunks of C++ programming. Windows applications continue to be written in C++.

This is a book about learning by doing and is aimed at programmers familiar with programming, but not C++. The key exercises are not simply listed at the end of the chapter, but are integrated into the main text. Readers work hands-on throughout the book. Each lessons poses numerous questions, asking readers to write answers directly in the book. The book includes answers to all questions, so readers can check their work. These exercises are not simple cookbook-style recipes (e.g., "Write a program to do xyz"). Instead, they are explorations—structured labs that guide readers through a series of steps to highlight specific features of C++.

3.0 out of 5 stars good book, but not without its flaws, October 27, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
For an old programmer trying to refresh his C++ knowledge, this is an excellent book. The pace is good, things are handled as promised (so no basic concepts, you're assumed to know those, but explanations of the specific implementation of those concepts in C++).

There are however some flaws, especially in the sample code. Things like using the word "and" in logical comparisons rather than the symbol "&&", things that should never have made it into an early draft of a book like this, let alone in a production print run 3 years after initial publication.

These errors may be specific to the Kindle edition, as some automated systems may try to "help" by "correcting" things by making them incorrect, but that doesn't excuse good proofreading.
So far (I've not read the entire book yet) errors like this are annoying but not serious enough to make the book useless (especially given the intended audience, experienced programmers).

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Redefines learning C++ to me, December 28, 2008

I did some C++ programming in college, taking the basic two semesters as a req on the Math Major. Haven't really looked at it since, but now that I've decided to get my MSE in CS I need to take a serious look at topics like Graphics pipelines and cryptography.

As such, I need to take a serious look at C++. Thankfully, this book is perfect for anyone with some knowledge of programming trying to learn this esoteric language.

Rather than flood you with facts, Ray Lischner gives you bite sized morsels that are more easily absorbed. While I'd recommend Thinking in C++ as a companion volume, this is definitely the book to go to first, especially if you just need to understand a topic whose code base in primarily in this language.

Great book on the fullness of the C++ language. If you truly wish to learn C++ and are not afraid of being challenged then this is the right book for you. Plenty of great explorations into the language and covered well.
