5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Redefines learning C++ to me
I did some C++ programming in college, taking the basic two semesters as a req on the Math Major. Haven't really looked at it since, but now that I've decided to get my MSE in CS I need to take a serious look at topics like Graphics pipelines and cryptography.

For an old programmer trying to refresh his C++ knowledge, this is an excellent book. The pace is good, things are handled as promised (so no basic concepts, you're assumed to know those, but explanations of the specific implementation of those concepts in C++).

There are however some flaws, especially in the sample code. Things like using the word "and" in logical comparisons rather than the symbol "&&", things that should never have made it into an early draft of a book like this, let alone in a production print run 3 years after initial publication.

These errors may be specific to the Kindle edition, as some automated systems may try to "help" by "correcting" things by making them incorrect, but that doesn't excuse good proofreading.
So far (I've not read the entire book yet) errors like this are annoying but not serious enough to make the book useless (especially given the intended audience, experienced programmers).

I did some C++ programming in college, taking the basic two semesters as a req on the Math Major. Haven't really looked at it since, but now that I've decided to get my MSE in CS I need to take a serious look at topics like Graphics pipelines and cryptography.

As such, I need to take a serious look at C++. Thankfully, this book is perfect for anyone with some knowledge of programming trying to learn this esoteric language.

Rather than flood you with facts, Ray Lischner gives you bite sized morsels that are more easily absorbed. While I'd recommend Thinking in C++ as a companion volume, this is definitely the book to go to first, especially if you just need to understand a topic whose code base in primarily in this language.

Great book on the fullness of the C++ language. If you truly wish to learn C++ and are not afraid of being challenged then this is the right book for you. Plenty of great explorations into the language and covered well.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just Not A Good Book, January 23, 2012

This review is from: Exploring C++: The Programmer's Introduction to C++ (Paperback)
I ended up returning this book after getting through the first 12 explorations (mini chapters). I have read several programming books and this one ranks as one of the worst. First the author's ordering of the explorations is not well thought out at all. I purchased this book because I wanted to learn object-oriented C++. You have to read about half of the book before the author starts talking about classes and objects. Another annoying thing is that someone at Apress thought it would be a good idea to allow the author to put blank lines in the text for writing in the book. The author poses questions and then wants you to write an answer in the book. Nothing was more frustrating then having to constantly see these lines take up half a page. Another problem I had was the readability of the author's code. He placed way too much logic in for loop declarations. The most annoying aspect of his code was how he assigned variables. He used the parentheses syntax. EX: int i(30); I kept seeing these as function calls. The author does not do a good job explaining any of the concepts and his code examples are very long for the simple constructs he is presenting.

I know NOTHING about programing, but after reading some reviews I decided to purchase it for my husband's birthday. He has no formal training, but likes to program in his free time and mentioned that C++ is something he'd like to learn. His face lit up when he opened this; Id say its perfect for the person with computer programing know how looking to learn something new in their free time. He says the book is very accessible.

1.0 out of 5 stars Does not explain concepts, September 2, 2011
This review is from: Exploring C++: The Programmer's Introduction to C++ (Paperback)
This book does not explain C++ well. The book claims to be an "Introduction" to C++, but the examples are poorly written and not clearly explained.

Don't waste your money on this trash.
