Book Description

March 2003 Odyssey Exploring Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai has been centre of lowland Northern Thai culture that is as distinct from the ethnic traditions in the hills as it is from the Mon-Khmer heritage of Bangkok and the central Siamese Thai. Located at the foot of a sacred mountain at the heart of a culture based on wet-rice cultivation, Chiang Mai was the capital of a kingdom called Lan Na that rivalled Ayutthaya, the Siamese precursor to Bangkok, for 200 years. However, with an inland location unable to take advantage of maritime trade, and with a cultivable land area too small to support the manpower required for large armies, Lan Na was to disappear in the struggle between Burma and Siam, and was ultimately eclipsed by the rise of Bangkok as the metropolitan heart of the Kingdom of Thailand. Chiang Mai, however, was to remain the centre of Northern Thai culture.

With the expertise of a resident, Oliver Hargreave first presents Chiang Mai as a historical city with traditions that have evolved into a thriving modern culture. Then he takes the city as a starting point for journeys into the picturesque landscape of the surrounding valley and mountains.

This is the first international edition of this guidebook, first published in Thailand in 1997, and revised as a second edition in 1998.

About the Author

Oliver Hargreave was born in 1948 in England. He graduated with a B.Sc. from the London School of Economics, majoring in International Politics. Following work as a management trainee he dropped out of an MBA program to take what is best described as a walk on the wild side. This took him to work in the iron mines of northwestern Australia before he caught banana boats and buses to Thailand in 1975. Falling in love with the land and her peoples, he was to return to Thailand frequently until 1981, when he took up a post as a teacher at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok. There he studied Thai in his free time. In 1985 he returned to Britain to study for an MA in Teaching English, which was followed by a three-year stint working in Saudi Arabia. In 1990 he returned to Thailand to take up a teaching position at Chiang Mai University before giving up full-time teaching in 1995 to pursue a career in writing and photography. He has remained a resident of Chiang Mai.

As as resident of Chiang Mai, I have found this book to be the most accurate and interesting guide book on Chiang Mai currently in print. Unlike many other guide books, it is just as relevant for a long-term resident or frequent visitor as it is for a short-term tourist. It is a great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money: cover price $17.95, October 21, 2006
This review is from: Exploring Chiang Mai: Northern Thailand's Historical and Cultural Center (Odyssey Illustrated Guide) (Paperback)
It's a shame that there are no newer editions out but this sturdily bound and nicely sized book seems to hold up against information I have found on various websites. Written by a long term resident of Chiang Mai, it is useful for a short visit or a long stay. There is a newer edition coming out next year. However, you should be able to get an edition from the author if you google for his email address. This books make the internet information search much much more comprehensible as does Nancy Chandler's map. I recommend both products as worth buying and genuinely useful.
