5.0 out of 5 stars There iare plenty of secular science books
There are plenty of secular science books if that is what you are looking for. This book is for those who believe that this earth was designed by a creator. If you are looking to be taught that the earth began with a big bang or a monkey evolved into a man, this textbook will not satisfy you. There are plenty of other textbooks that teach that. I used this book for my...

2.0 out of 5 stars Terrible
This text is beyond awful. Useless as a college preparatory text and not even good material for a sermon. Misquotes, mistakes of fact and a misrepresentation of the scientific method and even of the definition of science are on almost every page. Students who are subjected to a course based on this material are guaranteed to be at a disadvantage in gaining admission to...

I used this book for my highschoolers to give them a different perspective on science and they found it to be interesting.

2.0 out of 5 stars Terrible, October 2, 2011
This text is beyond awful. Useless as a college preparatory text and not even good material for a sermon. Misquotes, mistakes of fact and a misrepresentation of the scientific method and even of the definition of science are on almost every page. Students who are subjected to a course based on this material are guaranteed to be at a disadvantage in gaining admission to any serious post-graduate program from Masters Biology to Dental Hygenics. Does no service to science and even less to the holy Book. I would recommend it as an interesting and somewhat humorous example of pseudoscience and poor editing for a comparative literature survey..... but not to be taken seriously.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Most Interesting Science Curriculum Available, February 18, 2007
After homeschooling for nearly 20 years and searching for a science curriculum my kids would actually enjoy I'm pleased to say that I've finally found the best science curriculum available, bar none! At last, no more whining about science! And this one comes available with a CD-ROM and a disection kit that you can purchase seperately. If you use the Charlotte Mason approach to homeschooling and enjoy "living books" then this could be just what you're looking for.

3.0 out of 5 stars You'll love it or hate it, January 6, 2012
This review is from: Exploring Creation with Biology (Hardcover)
I taught myself this book last year, in 9th grade.

Writing style: Wile writes in an extremely informal, conversational style. Personally, I found this rather annoying. I was frequently wishing he'd leave out his wordy, useless commentary. Also, the frequent "Well, I'm sure you didn't understand this so let me explain it again" and "This topic is fascinating but it's way too complicated for you to understand, so you'll have to wait until chemistry" comments were EXTREMELY annoying. People I know either love or despise his writing. I will say, however, that this book is remarkably easy to understand.

Content: Unlike other reviewers, I don't have a college degree in biology, so I can't comment on this.

Ease of use: I taught myself this book and aced most of the tests. I met with a homeschool group to do the labs. It is completely possible to teach yourself this. I would recommend obtaining a microscope and dissection kit--they're definitely worthwhile!!

College preparation: I passed the CLEP Biology test with a 64 (scaled between 20 and 80, 50 is passing). But that was mostly because I studied other things, took practice tests, and am good at making educated guesses.

In conclusion: You will either love or hate the style of this book. I don't know how accurate it is, but with supplements and good test taking skills I passed the CLEP with plenty of room to spare. It's remarkably easy to understand, but it's often too easy (but that may be because I'm very good at school). It ranks in the middle for me: previous Abeka science books are far better, but the 1983 Chemistry book by Smoot, Price, and Smith is FAR worse.

Hope this helps.

The biology text has been good so far; my son is 12 years old
and I think an early exposure was appropriate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, November 13, 2011
This is every bit a science book but someone is consistently posting fake reviews to give a slanderous opinion of this book. This is wrong and dishonest to say the least. This book is based on the understanding that God created the earth. If someone hates God and wants to believe they are descended from snails or monkeys then buy another book. See, that is simple enough and you do not slander someone's work in the process.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Biology book!, August 22, 2009
We have used 5 of the J. Wile Science books and really like them. This first edition in Biology is very similar to the second edition and much more "cost effective" for our family.
If you like something that is written in a conversational style and is very readable for young people but, still quite challenging, you will enjoy this book. Good experiments, concise lab notation sheets, challenging module questions, and tests. Consistent format throughout all the J. Wile books.
Very well thought out system. We are on our 4th student in this book! Good ACT scores are a bonus!!!!
