Editorial Reviews

Review

Exploring Embellishments is a very gentle and encouraging introduction to enhancing your work through the art of embellishment. Rose Hughes has developed a very effective background piecing technique using a combination of reverse machine appliqué and couching, which creates a great bottom layer for her designs. She builds up her quilts with simple appliqué and adds a final layer of extra zing with embellishment. There are six projects included here, all designed and made in Rose's quirky, vibrant style. Each project focuses on a different embellishment technique, using air-dry clay beads, Angelina fibers, chenille stems (good old pipe cleaners really), wool roving or Lutradur. These techniques are handled very simply, so this is a great beginner's guide- a friendly helping hand to learn unfussy, effective art quilt techniques with basic tools and materials.

"Exploring Embellishments" is a book that will inspire you to try new things. It is a book for a beginner as well as for an experienced fiber artist. The techniques are useful not only for fiber art that is to be displayed and admired, but for great unique ideas for utilitarian quilts. Even though most of my art work is wall fiber art, I have made a baby quilt based on the ideas from this book using felt flowers. It was unique, colorful, three-dimensional, and was a huge hit with mom-to-be.

The embellishment techniques discussed in this book cover a large variety of techniques, they range from quilted fabric and felt to buttons and beads, from yard to angelina fibers. The pictures in the book are beautiful, instructions are clear. My copy of the book is full of bookmarks - there are many ideas that I want to come back to! It is a sign of great book that after several decades of being a fiber artist I was able to find so many new ideas.

To give you a better idea of the content here is a summary of what you will find in the book:

1. Introductory sections
Fabric memories
Adorninig ourselves and our quilts
Bag of tools

2. Technique
The perfect background
The basics of fast-piece applique backgrounds

3. Projects

This is a beautiful book, with photographs of so many inspiring quilts! Every technique is presented in the context of a project, beginning with a review of fast piece appliqué. So instead of struggling to make sense of a written description, you can easily figure out the different processes by working through the projects. There are a lot of great tips and ideas. I got so many ideas from just looking through the projects and the gallery. If you want to add texture and dimension to your quilts, this book will be a wonderful resource.

If you own Dream Landscapes, you'll want to own this one too.
Embellishments.
How to bead your quilts. How to make your own embellishments!!
And of course, all of the toolbox and color and applique information you'd get in a class workshop or seminar with Rose Hughes directly.
Bindings, finishings...
Again, a four part book, wonderfully photographed, and thoughtfully put together.
Not just a pattern book, but a gallery of finished quilts by the artist and other artists - and patterns too!

"Exploring Embellishments:...." offers something for experienced and new fiber artist. The embellishment techniques covered vary widely. They include using quilted fabric pieces, lutradur and angelina as some of the flat techniques. Other techniques focus on dimensional shapes made from air dried clay, felted wool or wrapped yarn, to name a few. Where Rose's book stands apart from other books on embellishment, are the clear directions and photographs which help you each step of the way. Suggestions on ways to use the embellishments get your creative juices flowing. This is a book not just for the library shelf but one you'll use.

The six projects in this book use various types of embellishments and use Rose's "fast-piece appliqué" technique in constructing the background. This method is similar to reverse appliqué in that you layer the fabrics and then cut out certain areas to let the base fabric show through. This method can be applied on any size project. In addition, Rose uses couched yarn to delineate the cut out portions.

Rose includes information about setting the mood through the colour choice of your fabrics and embellishments, as well as discussing various types of embellishments beyond the usual buttons and beads (which she talks about too).

I found the fast-piece appliqué technique intriguing and liked how you could create a complex background with only two fabrics. Each project uses different embellishments, so you can try something new, such as lutradur or wool roving. This book has lots of photos so it's easy to understand Rose's process. The section on creating your own design from your personal photos was also informative.

I have been creating art quilts for quite some time but have not ventured very far into the wonderful world of embellishments. This is an excellent book for those like me who want to embellish their art quilts but aren't exactly sure of how to go about it. Cheers for Rose Hughes, who has filled a need for artists like me.
