5.0 out of 5 stars A scholarly look at the Dutch in the New York area
This is a scholarly overview of the remaining Dutch heritage in the NY-NJ-DE area. The aim is to document rather than to provide a tour guide. However, with the web, it would be easy to put together a tour and the information about opening times and so on is constantly changing, so including it here wouldn't fit with the emphasis on documentation for the long haul...

This is a scholarly overview of the remaining Dutch heritage in the NY-NJ-DE area. The aim is to document rather than to provide a tour guide. However, with the web, it would be easy to put together a tour and the information about opening times and so on is constantly changing, so including it here wouldn't fit with the emphasis on documentation for the long haul.

I enjoyed reading the short essays on the history of New Netherland, Holland Mania (the 19th century craze for Dutch colonial architecture and art), the first Jews in New Netherland, slavery in New Netherland, among others. These are well-written, scholarly overviews conveying in a concise and accessible manner what we know now about these topics. Note the essays are on New Netherland and not just New Amsterdam. This shows the wide geographical focus, not just on Lower Manhattan, but on other areas too. I read the book as part of my family history research, and was pleased to see material on Demarests in Bergen Co., NJ.

In addition to the historical essays there are overviews of Dutch materials found in local museums. (Although it sounds strange to refer to the Met at a local museum.) For anyone interested in this topic, this is a great place to start. An up-to-date bibliography gives suggestions for further reading at the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great service to the descendants of Dutch immigrants to America, June 2, 2013

This review is from: Exploring Historic Dutch New York: New York City * Hudson Valley * New Jersey * Delaware (Paperback)
Roger Panetta, Editor of "Dutch New York: The Roots of Hudson Valley Culture", has done a great service to the descendants of Dutch immigrants to America with this book. It's not as if there were no books on the Dutch during the founding and settling of New Netherlands, it is that they were hard to find, were in Dutch, and didn't come up in a Google search online. Descended from one of those early Dutch immigrants, the cultural and social signs were evident although neither I nor other members of my extended family knew we were ancestrally Dutch until I took up genealogy about 2009, which was the quadricentennial of the Dutch in New Netherlands. This book can be read from front to back or used as a reference; its' index is quite detailed. Every page provides a "new" viewpoint or vision of early New York and rearranges the actual history of New York as we learned it in school - for me that is six decades ago.Dutch New York: The Roots of Hudson Valley Culture

5.0 out of 5 stars Exploring a Great History, December 19, 2012
This review is from: Exploring Historic Dutch New York: New York City * Hudson Valley * New Jersey * Delaware (Paperback)
Dover Publications can always be relied upon to print quality books with firm, durable bindings and high-res images. "Exploring Dutch New York" is no exception. This nicely bound, well-illustrated book captures the essential Dutch points of interest of the City and the surrounding regions. Some of the discoveries were intriguing to me. While I knew that Staten Island would hold plenty of sites of Dutch settlements and buildings, I was pleasantly surprised to find a handful in my old neighborhood of Bensonhurst in Brooklyn!

The texts surrounding the sites are, for the most part, minimal. Yet, they provide just enough information to get you started on your exploration, whether by visiting or reading further--or both. There is a generous amount of photos, illustrations and reproductions which whet the appetite, too. In a way, the Dutch past is almost brought back. You can almost see what Minuit, Vander Donck, Stuyvesant and others saw. And that is the whole point of books like this and visiting the locales they describe: to try to resurrect history, understand what the people back then experienced, and enrich our present.

Travelling through the Hudson Valley and the neighbouring valleys, as well as the valleys of New Jersey for three weeks as I did, this book proved to provide fractional insights, mainly through pictures of so called Dutch houses.
On that score the book can hardly be called a travel guide.
What it does not offer is a coherent geographical and historical oversight. It lacks for example hikes, either by car of on foot. It does overlook the settlements made by the Dutch as can for example be discovered through the founding dates of their churches. Not all the pictures have correct addresses quoted, in such a way even a satnav had trouble finding the locations.
The strenght of the book is that it gives an introduction to Dutch houses the Hudson Valley sitting in the cpmfort of your armchair.

3.0 out of 5 stars Concise and comprehensive, January 17, 2012

This book offers a helpful overview of sites related to New York's Dutch history. The range is impressive, covering the metropolitan area broadly defined; the format is compact and conveniently portable; and the design is handsome, with lots of gorgeous full-color photos. The descriptions are accurate and up-to-date but necessarily brief; references to more detailed sources would be welcome. It's a great place to start planning a heritage tour, but you will need more to track down all the details.

My husband ordered this book. I think he had been looking for something like it for a while. He read it quickly which is not really like him. He was proud of his Dutch ancestry and their part in building what is known as New York.

Reading this book at home brings youi back to the old colony nad makes you realize how much of the old colony and the Dutch influence is still present in New York. But it also reads as a pleasant guide book when searching for and exploring the historic Dutch New York.
