5.0 out of 5 stars First Trapunto Project A Huge Success, August 25, 2000
This review is from: Exploring Machine Trapunto: New Dimensions (Paperback)
Having seen Hari Walner on the HGTV show "Simply Quilts", I purchased this book to take a stab at her machine trapunto technique. I have no quilting experience, was using a 27 year old sewing machine, and my sewing skills were very rusty. My first project(Sparkling Dahlia)was a huge success thanks to the easy to follow instructions, illustrations, and patterns contained in this book.

I found real inspiration in the beautiful color photographs of the many quilts which incorporated the machine trapunto technique in combination with a wide variety of other quilting techniques.

I was pleased to see photographs and brief biographies of the 21 quilters who contributed to the book. It was also nice to see Hari credit those who assisted her with her own projects.

This book is not meant to be a beginning quilters "Bible". It is a wonderful book for anyone interested in adding the machine trapunto technique to their sewing skills repertoire.

This is the very best book on Machine Trapunto. I am thrilled with the items I have made using her guidance. If you like the look you get from Trapunto, you will be very pleased with the results you get using the machine method.

This is a great book for the starting machine quilter. Everything you need to know is in the book, all illustrated. There are a lot of patterns to choose. Good choice to start with.

Ordered this book to help me with a quilt I was making for a school auction. I ended up reading a number of machine trapunto and machine quilting books. This book was published in 1999, but does not appear to dated, though it does not show or address some of the new presser feet or sewing machines which are now available.

It does cover different types of batting, what to do if you make a mistake, and has many excellent color photographs. The book also includes very useful and helpful patterns showing what should be shown with water soluble thread and what can be left to be quilted later.

I like the book, but don't feel it addressed the bearding that might occur using the polyester batting (the author prefers) with dark fabrics or that the free motion presser foot shown in the book might not be suitable to quilt the finished quilt given the thickness of the batting the author favors. It also did not address needle breakage. Hari Walner's book Trapunto by Machine, published in 1996, does a better job covering basics. This book might be meant as a companion to the earlier book. So either get the first book, or buy both books.

For ideas, I also liked the Diane Gaudynski Quilt Savvy Machine Quilting Guidebook, which had a good section on machine trapunto.
