Book Description

0961320710 978-0961320713 January 1, 1995
Exploring the Night Sky with Binoculars was originally written to complement The Night Sky planisphere (by the same author). The planisphere helps the beginner find what is up in the sky for any day and time. The book discusses the significance of what is seen.

The book starts with a discussion of how to observe the sky and how to choose binoculars with astronomy in mind. Then comes a brief geography lesson of the universe, including helpful models to keep in mind when trying to visualize large numbers, such as millions, billions, and trillions. The bulk of the book is a survey, starting with the Sun and its family of planets, moons, asteroids and comets, then moves outward into the Milky Way with its nebulae, stellar remnants, open star clusters, and globular star clusters, and finally out beyond the Milky Way to the realm of the galaxies. Examples of each kind of object are given that are visible with no more than binoculars, and each is discussed with enough detail to make it meaningful but not overwhelming to the beginner.

The appendices include seasonal tours of the sky, tips on buying telescopes, and a resource guide for those who want to go further.

(Exploring the Night Sky with Binoculars received honorable mention at the New York Academy of Sciences Children's Science Book Awards.)

Editorial Reviews

Review

In a joint review with Guy Otwell's To Know the Stars
"These books complement each other; each is a guide to the night sky, visually of immediate and lasting help, pedagogically no less than gifted...

"If you know your way a little with unaided eye about the night sky, the next step is the use of a good pair of binoculars. A steady hand makes a powerful aid to astronomical exploration out of the same instrument someone uses by day for watching football or seeking birds. The Galilean wonders appear: the moon's craters, Jupiter's four moons, the pahses of Venus, swarms of stars in open clusters such as the Pleiades. All the best (northern) sights are nicely mapped and described here, with the season for each, and the paintings quite accurately evoke just what you will see. A dark sky is the most difficult requirement for the marvelous sight of several external galaxies...." -- Scientific American, December 1984

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginning astronomers!, June 30, 1998

This review is from: Exploring the Night Sky with Binoculars (Paperback)
Exploring the Night Sky is great at sparking interest in atronomy.

While this book offers clear and useful guidance, you won't need a college course just to understand the terminology or an expensive model of telescope to make use of it.

Exploring the Night Sky With Binoculars is perfectly suited to helping beginners experience and *enjoy* the stars!

For the price, this is a very slim offering. Some nice information, great illustrations, but it's barely a pamphlet. And it spends a good amount of its ink telling us how we really should buy the author's planisphere. This little 'book' should have been included with the plainisphere. That would have made a nice package -- one I'd gladly have paid for. As it is, I just feel ripped off.

If you own NightWatch: A Practical Guide to Viewing the Universe, save your money. Dicknson's book has great star charts, and they point out which objects make good binocular subjects.

A disappointment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good, July 19, 2003

Took me quite a while to outgrow this little book and I still come back to it every now and then. Even if you don't intend to seriously dive into astronomy, this book provides a good guide for an occasional backyard outing with a pair of binoculars.
