This is a wonderful book to read if you are wanting to go into the outdoors and handle your own survival. Pictures are well illustrated and presented and very realistic. If you plan on spending some time in the wilderness this is a must read with insightful information in the event you were stranded or lost. Allan MacFarlan did a good job with lots of information to absorb if you are considering camping, hiking or exploring on
your own.

HUNTING, not "Exploring" in the Wild,
This review is from: Exploring the Outdoors with Indian Secrets (Paperback)
The title is deceptive, but we'll blame the publisher. The original title, right on the copyright page, was HUNTING with Indian Secrets. But in hippie-dippie 1971, they changed it to "Exploring". Hunting is ALL you get: how to get close to ducks, how to track deer, how to build a fish weir, how to jacklight deer, even. (Yes, the author notes it's illegal: it's strictly for life-or-death situations.) He discusses the history of Indian hunting, pointing out at every turn what's legal/illegal/unsporting these days. Some is common knowledge, some is downright clever. For example, Indians wove baskets, held them over their heads, then swam among ducks with long nooses they could slip over webbed feet. Ducks wouldn't flee a natural-materials basket. He also discusses archery in depth, and fish spears and other primitive hunting tools. Mouse traps, snapping turtle traps, catching birds - how to hunt any kind of North American animal is here. But it is NOT a general survival book.

The subject matter of this book is very poor for anyone serious about the subject. Most of the ideas a very simplistic. Any outdoorsman knows these things, many are contrived and simply of no use. With the availability of the internet, this book is just not useful. Save your money.

I thought this book was about tracking and what not, it's more about primitive traping. I feel that most of the info in this book is general knowledge.

I guess if you never bin in the woods before. Never learned anything about survival in the woods. This book would be ok if it was the first out door book you have ever read.
