5.0 out of 5 stars LOVED IT!
Of the nearly 2 dozen books written by Pagan author Gerina Dunwich, I consider this one (along with Herbal Magick, Wicca Garden, and Your Magickal Cat) to be her finest. I highly recommend it for all beginners and intermediate students of the art of witchcraft. It covers all aspects of spellcasting, including historical perspectives and practical applications. 3.0 out of 5 stars Nice Reference
I really liked this book. Most Wicca 101 books come with a chapter on magick spells and Magickal Correspondences. This book basically takes that chapter and blows it up into something a little more useful.

However it doesn't contain any info on raisng and focusing power or using visualizations so if you don't already have a book on that (Laurie Cabot, Scott Cunningham,...

I really liked this book. Most Wicca 101 books come with a chapter on magick spells and Magickal Correspondences. This book basically takes that chapter and blows it up into something a little more useful.

However it doesn't contain any info on raisng and focusing power or using visualizations so if you don't already have a book on that (Laurie Cabot, Scott Cunningham, Silver Ravenwolf etc.) yer gonna have a recipe book. I think it makes a good companion piece to a book that teaches a specific magickal path.

Note: Conservative Wiccans aren't gonna like this one, it challenges the Law of 3 and the idea of not using person specific love spells. If you have serious problems with that i'd stay away from this one.

I highly recommend it for all beginners and intermediate students of the art of witchcraft. It covers all aspects of spellcasting, including historical perspectives and practical applications. Good for any and all traditions. The book does not focus on any of the religious aspects of Wicca, so if you're looking for a book about theology, you should look elsewhere. But if you're interested in learning about, and practicing, folk-magick, this is definitely the book you should read. It is not fluffy, preachy, or corny (as are so many books of this genre in this day and age.) Dunwich includes many wonderful and easy-to-follow spells to use, as well as sound advice on crafting your own. Explore this one - you won't be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars PERFECT for BEGINNERS!, April 1, 2005

Exploring Spellcraft is the perfect beginner's guide for those who are new to the art of spellcasting. It teaches you how to create your own spells, and also includes many easy-to-follow spells for various purposes. I especially enjoyed the chapter devoted to Sybil Leek, and the chapter about Black Magick (a subject considered taboo by most other modern witchcraft writers) was quite fascinating. I really liked the author's writing style and that she didn't "talk down" to the reader or preach the Wiccan Rede like some others do. I found this book to be refreshing, informative, and well-written. Exploring Spellcraft covers a lot of ground for a book of its size. I can honestly say that it's well worth every penny of its price!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book by One of my Favorite Authors!, February 11, 2001

This review is from: Exploring Spellcraft: How to Create and Cast Effective Spells (Paperback)
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It has tons of information about the different magical arts and doesn't preach about wiccan ethics the way so many other books seem to do in this day and age. A bit of the information contained in this book is pretty standard stuff (like ritual tools and correspondences) but if the author overlooked all of that the book would probably have little value to those who are just starting out in the craft. Ms. Dunwich offers very good advice on crafting one's own spells from scratch. (She inspired me to write a few of my own) And her chapter devoted to candle magick is very thorough. I found the chapters dealing with black magik, sybil leek, and bast-wicca to be the most interesting and I give the book an overall rating of EXCELLENT.

This books is for beginners and older witches. Good back to basic. And for myself, over 40 years of practice, I learn something, from everyone of her books.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Decent Reference, August 29, 2010

The book is a good reference work, with plenty of background and overview. I agree with the other reviewers that the book doesn't provide enough on the visualization or energy concentration aspects of the spell casting or development. Having said that, the book is a great read for anyone interested in the Craft, has a great set of references and other information to refer to, and is a must before deciding to walk down the path as a practitioner. Not a great standalone work, but a phenomenal complementary one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Usefull a must keep on bookshelves everywhere, June 23, 2008
This review is from: Exploring Spellcraft: How to Create and Cast Effective Spells (Paperback)
Gerina gives it to you straight so fluffy bunnies need not apply, She isn't going to suggar coat magick either practiced today or by the ancients. She puts it out their for you to decide whether to use it or step off. If your smart and have been in this as long as i have you'll stumble on the fact Gardner set peole up with the wican crede(he made up BTW to keep his coven in check) and that the 3fold is most definantly a fear tactic to create pause. As far as karma duh as above so below and you get back what you put out is fundiamentals of physics. so every positive action has and equal negative reaction (fluffies need to chew on that for awhile)
