This is the first in a seven-volume series, Exploring the United States through Literature, that lists books and nonprint materials for children in grades K-8. Entries are arranged by state; this volume covers Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Within each state, books, videos, filmstrips, and other materials are listed under nonfiction, biography, fiction, and professional materials. Cataloging and interest levels are given for each entry, along with a brief annotation and a suggested activity. For example, under
Paul Bunyan of the Great Lakes, it is suggested that "young people may write a new Paul Bunyan tall tale about a feature not addressed in this collection." The more than 600 items are indexed by author, title, and subject.
This series is similar in concept to the American Library Association's Reading for Young People series. The Great Lakes states were covered in The Midwest (1979) and The Upper Midwest (1981). However, the great majority of the titles in this new series were published since 1980.
The second volume in this series, Exploring the Pacific States through Literature, is due to be published this month, and the remaining volumes will be released this spring and summer. Public and elementary and middle-school libraries will want to purchase at least the volume for their state and will want to consider the entire series to help students with the perennial assignment of researching a state.
