Book Description

February 9, 2001 5 and upVoyages of Discovery
Exploring the World tells of Christopher Columbus' expedition around the world and his landing in America, of Ferdinand Magellan's journey to establish a trade route from Spain to the Spice Islands, and of Francis Drake's perilous voyage around the Cape of Good Hope. You will read about why the explorers set out, how they traveled, hazards they encountered on the way, and what they brought back with them. Clear maps and superb reconstructions bring these journeys vividly to life.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-6--Explorers of the Ancient World focuses on an early Egyptian expedition down the Red Sea to trade with the people of Punt, a trip around Africa taken by the Phoenicians, and several journeys made by the ancient Greeks. Exploring the World offers brief overviews of the circum-navigations of the globe made by Magellan and Drake. This series depends heavily on the superb, extremely detailed illustrations for its success. There are cross sections of ships and details of sailing life. The short chapters are accompanied by maps. The text is very brief, and students must also read the captions for the illustrations in order to gain further information. More detailed titles on the same reading level include Richard Humble's The Voyage of Magellan (Watts, 1989; o.p.), Roger Coote's The First Voyage Around the World (Watts, 1990; o.p.), Jason Hook's Sir Francis Drake (Bookwright, 1988; o.p.), Charnan Simon's Explorers of the Ancient World (Children's Press, 1990), and Dinah Starkey's Scholastic Atlas of Exploration (Scholastic, 1994).
