This review is from: Exploring the Yellowstone Backcountry: A Guide to the Hiking Trails of Yellowstone with Additional Sections on Canoeing, Bicycling, and Cross-Country Skiing (A Sierra Club totebook) (Paperback)
This is the best trails book for any of the mountain states national parks. I have not found a book for Glacier or Rocky Mountain National parks as good as this book. The Kent and Donna Dannen guide to RMNP comes close. This book may look as if it is for backpackers, but it has lots of info for day hikes, too.

Before the book arrived (which it did in 3 days) I was pleasantly supprised when the author, Dr. Bach Jr. reached out to me and wanted to let me know he is available in case I have any questions. Even though the book is well written and provides great information in a lot of different angles about the park, having a seasoned backpacker ready to offer words of wisdom for your specific trip is always a vote of confidence. Buy this book if you plan to visit the world's first national park.

This book was extremely helpful for our trip to Yellowstone this summer. It has great trail descriptions and helpful information about weather, fauna and flora, and natural history, and a backpacking checklist. I also loved the compact size and blank pages for field notes in the back (writing down everything we did definitely helped us remember all the fantastic things we saw). The author even signed our copy since he was the amazon seller.

The guide is old but still has very useful information organized in a smaller sized book easy to carry. It has information on hiking, x-country skiing and biking. We have used it many times during our trips to Yellowstone.

Planning a trip out west to visit the National Parks, Bach's book was one of my first purchases. I'm glad I did. It not only prepared me for Yellowstone, but it also prepared me for my visits to Glacier and Yosemite National Parks. The gear lists and the general guidelines for hiking in the backcountry were invaluable in preparing a beginner backcountry hiker to the path ahead.

Bach does a wonderful job of describing each hike in brief detail. The book guides you in every direction, from locating the trailhead to the start and finish of each hike. As he describes each significant turn of the trail, he also points out natural features and wildlife to watch for. A great addition to your Yellowstone library.
