Biography

Shonen Knife (少年ナイフ, Shōnen Naifu; lit. "Boy knife") is an all-female Japanese pop-punk band formed in Osaka, Japan, in 1981. Heavily influenced by 1960s girl groups, pop bands, The Beach Boys, and early punk rock acts, such as the Ramones, the trio crafts stripped-down songs expressing infectious melodies and simplistic, exuberant lyrics sung both in Japanese and English.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Pop Album of 1997!, June 13, 1998
By A Customer

My husband and I have been listening to Shonen Knife for several years, but when this album was released, we became hard-core fans! This music is so fun, so upbeat, and so 80's new wave, that you just can't stop listening! The catchy songs will be in your mind long after you've listened to the CD. And now that the girls have a greater command of the English language, you can easily learn the lyrics and sing along! And, as a bonus, several of the songs are repeated and sung in Japanese at the end of the CD! I highly recommend this CD; it's a shame that Shonen Knife really isn't known in the U.S.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the Best, March 16, 2009

BRAND NEW KNIFE may be Shonen Knife's most consistent and deeply-felt album, and "Explosion" is the single from that CD. I'm not sure if that means it's SK's greatest track, but this a catchy burst of rock'n'roll energy - as if the band had been holding it all in until these tracks. This would be the band's last full-length album before Michie's departure, and it represents a flowering of their songwriting and performing craft.
