More About the Author

I always had an intense interest in academics and martial arts. In pursuit of these two areas, I received my PhD in Theoretical High Energy Particle Physics from the University of Connecticut (but not your typical nerd!). As a graduate student I had an intense interest in Martial Arts as well as Physics. Today I teach Muay Thai along with ground submission techniques (jiu jitsu)and speak at various events about the values one obtains from martial training and sports in general.

In addition to pursuing my professional and martial interests, I have always enjoyed writing. As a result of conducting a women's self-defense course, I wrote and instructed a video "Defend Yourself" that was distributed internationally by Panther Productions. I also had a strong interest to experience working in the major film and television industry. After obtaining my Screen Actors Guild card I worked on a number of very prominent TV series and major motion pictures with many of today's well-known stars. These activities were basically my hobbies if you will as I made my living using my education travelling internationally to give frequent training lectures in technology.

I travelled to Asia frequently for over a decade to develop business and always found time on weekends and evenings to study Muay Thai, jiu jitsu and Zen. My passion for martial study continues to grow daily. The thrill of learning more about oneself by practicing a martial art is fascinating. As I tell my students, the battle is within each of us, not with each of us. To understand and conquer one's self is the goal in training in martial arts. It is the "DO" in JuDO, TaekwonDO, etc. By exercising just kicking and punching you basically have a cardio class. By studying only Zen you develop an interesting perspective on life. When combining the martial physical exercises with Zen tempered by control of one's emotions under stress one develops a strong spirit -- the warrior spirit. Life is a struggle which makes us all "warriors" to some degree. If you get the flu you try to fight it off; bacteria attacking a cell initiate protective means; some fish change color to avoid being a meal. If there is life, there is struggle. Understanding this and how to use this to develop a strong spirit, a strong character is the main intent of martial arts today. It is this passion that inspires me to write.

Today, I live with my wife in Florida on our ranch and continue to research and teach Jiu Jitsu as well as pursue my passion in writing. And I am always interested in feedback so feel free to contact me at jheines2005@yahoo.com.

If you're new to Muay Thai, or just want to refine your skills, then this is a great book. It has a good amount of drills and combos that are clearly described. This book is a great supplement to your Muay Thai training, and if you go through each drill in the book, I have no doubt you will have better form and technique. Although in black and white, the photos are great and illustrate exactly what your form needs to look like for each combination.

Format: Paperback
I have had a lifelong passion for the martial arts. In my more than 50 years of study I have been fortunate to have trained with some of the very best instructors in the world. I have been a student and instructor of numerous combat systems (Judo, Jujitsu, Karate-Do, Boxing, Wrestling, Kick boxing, Combatives, Police Defensive Tactics and numerous weapons).

I am always seeking to increase my martial arts knowledge and recently purchased this volume (Explosive Muay Thai: Beyond the basics by Jerry Heines with Kru Amorndet Ranjanthuek) on Thai Kickboxing. I have always considered Muay Thai as one of the best and most effective fighting arts in the world. I have also read and reviewed numerous previous volumes on this topic. This 165 page volume is one of the best books I have read lately on the fighting art of Muay Thai.

This 81/2 by 11 text is organized into 5 detailed chapters. The first chapter explains how to use this book for best results. The second chapter provides a brief overview of the Muay Thai philosophy. The third chapter deals with the warrior’s mind which covers the Zen philosophy and Muay Thai and other topics of interest. Chapter four shows how to practice Muay Thai “Shadow Sparring.” This chapter also shows Muay Thai basic punches, strikes and kicks. The final chapter (5) gives detailed information on “Free Sparring” advice. Do not pass up the Appendix sections because it has numerous safety tips, useful Thai expressions, suggestions for a better life and other information. Using this book along with actual hands-on training with a Muay Thai instructor will produce good results.

If you are seeking some solid information on Muay Thai you should check out this book.

This is a great book for those looking to improve their technique. For someone who spent 10+ years doing taekwondo, the transition to muay thai was a tough one. This book definitely helped my technique and is now my go-to reference. GET IT!!!!

I'm blessed to actually train under one of the authors, Kru Ahn. This book is very much like him- full of knowledge, understanding the need for practice and focused repetition.
I was pleasantly surprised to find a large section on philosophy and approach. There is still plenty of material on drills and techniques with a detailed section on combinations that one can try at home.
Great book!
