Ideas to Simplify Your Life and Embrace Your Space with Expo

Chore Board

Using a whiteboard and Expo markers to make a family chore board is the simple solution to getting everyone (spouses included!) to pitch in without pitching a fit. You can let go of round-the-clock reminders, as "I forgot" is no longer a valid excuse.

Head of the Class

Give kids a whiteboard and Expo Washable markers to allow them to keep learning long after the school day is over. Take a fifteen-minute recess out of your day to be a student in their pretend classroom as they "teach" you their latest lesson. They'll get some fun study time and you'll always get a gold star for attendance.

The List Goes On

Multiple mouths to feed mean you're constantly catering to the likes and dislikes of others. Keep up with their varying tastes by putting an Expo board on the fridge so everyone can request their favorite fare. They'll remain satisfied and you'll be happy to never hear "There's nothing for me to eat" ever again.

Root for the Home Team

Grab some Expo markers in the team colors and go wild on the car windows. It's a fun family activity to show your support and comes off when the game is over. Which is especially nice if someone wasn't quite as victorious as they'd hoped.

Life Labeled

Use Expo markers to label your plastic containers. If they're clear, taping a small piece of paper on the opposite side will keep your label legible. And you can change your mind with a flick of the wrist.

Entertaining Possibilities

Use Expo markers on glass trays to write out the names of specialty hors'devours or wine and cheese pairings. You can also write on small decorative tiles for reusable place settings or buffet labels. Your guests will be thrilled when the only thing they have to ask is "More wine please?"

A good friend gave me this dozen pack of Prismacolor's Col-Erase Erasable Colored Pencils, and boy am I glad he did! I've played with and reviewed seven other brands prior to donation. Here's why I think this is the best:

-- Good range of colors, including neutrals not ordinarily found in a pack of a dozen colored pencils, Terra Cotta and Tuscan Red (as a prior reviewer correctly noted, reddish brown);

-- Colors work well with each other and are realistic, not overly hued or vivid (a weakness in many colored pencils sold to kids);

-- Color "lead" (actually color core) has about the same drag from one pencil to the next, which is to say minimal;

-- Color "laydown" (ease and extent of application) is quite good, and similarly predictable from one pencil to the other;

-- Solid barrel, good wood inside, cores seem tough, too; when the tip is sharpened lines lay down straight and hard and if sufficient wood beneath the tip is exposed, they shade-in quite well, too;

-- A few brands of colored pencil are starting to go on sale pre-sharpened, but my friend said he sharpened these himself (despite the box photo);

-- They erased well, at least for me;

-- Last but certainly not least, this Prismacolor Col-Erase is MADE IN THE USA! Whoopee! Only one I've seen yet.

The only drawback I can think of is that the barrels are hexagonal (six-sided), as opposed to the round barrel that seems to be slowly catching on in this category. At the time of this writing, it's back-to-school season and comparison-shoppers can get a similar dozen colored pencils for $4.00 or less, but they won't be of this quality or color range and probably won't have erasers. This Col-Erase won't be under $4.

UPDATE 10/14/05: I previously reported that these markers were of inconsistent quality. As it turns out, this was partially due to user error. I had been storing the markers vertically (in the supplied box) with the tips pointing up. This significantly degrades the marking quality.

I am now storing the markers upside-down, and it has improved the quality of most of them, most notable the orange marker.

I'm keeping my original review intact for posterity. It appears unaltered below.

--

I use whiteboards a lot. In fact, my co-workers know that I can hardly explain anything without whipping out a few dry-erase markers and making a quick diagram. I'm also a big fan of using various different colored markers when whiteboarding complex ideas.

For a long time I've felt constrained by the traditional four marker colors that seem omnipresent in the workplace: blue, red, green and black. Four colors simply isn't enough for big ideas! When my wife bought me this 12-pack of markers, I didn't hesitate to crack them open and put them to good use.

Sadly, I was somewhat disappointed in the results. My complaint is two-fold: First, the quality of the markers varies from color to color; some markers make bold, crisp lines while other yield faint and washed-out scribbles. Second, the variety of colors is somewhat lacking.

Let's break it down by color. I believe it's possible to break them down into three groups of four markers, which I'll review below:

OLD RELIABLES

This 12-pack includes the traditional red, blue, green, and black, of course. These tried and true markers do not disappoint, making clean, crisp lines that can be easily read.

I got this set specifically because I needed a yellow marker- the colors I got were more random and ill matched than what you see here- I guess to them a marker is a marker.

I got these so I could do color coded scripture marking. The leads are nice and creamy soft. They do not appear to bleed through the thin paper on my scriptures. My only downside is that in the color assortment, there is no orange!

I did have one problem...the blue I received in this package was an empty wooden tube - no lead. But the Prismacolor folks did send my a replacement pencil.

Amazon, I'd like to see the colors listed in the package as an improvement to the listing.

Just got these pencils today after reading the reviews. Not much talked about regarding erasing, but took a chance.
Bought these as a teacher who works with kids in a help class and sometimes help kids in math by marking up their paper.
Because I wanted my markups to stand out, I wanted a colored pencil, but kids sometimes want to erase the teacher marks.

Opened them up, eager to see, drew a line and then tried to erase and TERRIBLE. Fades about 50% of the writing, but can easily see what was drawn or written.

Tried other colors, all the same result- can still see what was written after erasing- tried another eraser- NO BETTER.

Do not buy if looking for the "erase" factor of a colored pencil.

Will continue to search.

p.s. I contacted seller: TCP Gloabal and he heard my complaint, but passed my on to an "Amazon rep" and that just got me a VOICE MAIL!!!! AAAHHH
