Product Description

The Ray Flash is a unique adapter for your hot-shoe flash unit designed to replicate the lighting effect produced by traditional, expensive, and heavy powered studio ring flash units.

The Ray Flash is portable and lightweight, and has been designed to take advantage of a camera’s TTL metering capabilities.  Because the Ray Flash relies on the hot-shoe flash to generate its light, it contains no electronics, no flash tubes and requires no cumbersome cables.  The light distribution is accomplished through a sophisticated system of internal prisms, reflectors and light-shapers designed to distribute and project the light evenly around the lens.

COMPATIBLE WITH:
  • CANON 580EX II used on 5D, 40D, 30D, 20D, 10D

I hated the look of this compared to a real ringflash. The catch light (reflection in the model's eyes) was very ugly-it's a u shape and not round (and also too small). Using this device with any background other than a wall or backdrop just yields shots that look like a normal flash shot.

Considering that this is not really a flash or a light, but just a plastic adapter, and that you can get a real ringflash for not much more, the price on the Ray Flash is way too high. For say $100. it might be worth it as a toy to have in your bag for occasional use, but at $300., no way.

For close portrait shooting in a fluid situation this ring flash will give you a nicely diffused light. It will cost you a stop or 1.5 stops so you'll want to adjust accordingly. It feels a little rickety and looks strange but works fairly well.

I've had 2 of these. With the first one, the ring broke internally so the light wouldn't travel all the way around the ring. The company was willing to replace it, but the 2nd one was even worse. The ring section separated from the flash mount. i.e. the black part separated from the silver part. It's really just poor quality. I know this thing wasn't a fortune, but I would expect better for $200.

Way to go for Ray Flash.. but no very useful without a flash installed on your camera without any triggers. If you have a trigger, it wont fit.
