Editorial Reviews

Product Description

NY Export: Opus Jazz is a scripted adaptation of a 1958 "ballet in sneakers" by Jerome Robbins, a companion piece to his legendary West Side Story, that tells an abstract tale of disaffected urban youth. Shot entirely on location in the abandoned spaces of today's New York City on anamorphic 35mm, the film returns the original choreography to the streets that inspired it. Featuring dancers from the New York City Ballet, NY EXPORT: OPUS JAZZ reveals the timelessness of Robbins' vision.

I was fortunate to see this when it was broadcast on Great Performances. If you have any interest at all in dance - really really good dance - you need to see this film. Jerome Robbins remarkable choreography combined with exciting young dancers and fine filmmaking makes for a memorable experience. I plan to see it again and again, just as soon as the DVD is released.

Having seen the ballet live in NYC, I was fascinated by the way the choreography was set to fit into the background of NYC streets and buildings and how it complemented the original choreography, which of course is "àla West Side Story". One must always remember that film is two dimensional and the stage is three dimensional and it's a LIVE presentation each and every time.

I watched this each time it aired on Great Performances and was totally spellbound each time. Video isn't always the best way for an audience to feel the energy of a dance piece, but it's so well done that the experience of watching the film definitely rivals the live experience. It's very intimately shot but the camera work also allows you to see the patterns of the dancers' bodies from many angles, including really beautiful aerial shots.

I was in awe the first time I viewed this on TV and continue to be amazing at the quality of the dancing. The filming production is first rate, the music is engaging, and, of course, the choreography is beyond comparison. Fabulous!!

With the poetic justice of Balanchie's amazing collection of choreography for the New York City Ballet it is some times very easy to forget that Jerome Robbins fresh approach to dance throughout the 20th Century can still catch you by total surprise. A master of form, shape, texture, and musicality this video brings a unique and offbeat side of the New York City Ballet and the unmistakable Robbins's mastery of lyrical jazz to the focus. With a marriage pedestrian costuming and melange of metropolitan settings the choreography creates a story and feeling that is so clearly Robbins its as if it was created yesterday! If you love Robbins then this video is a different side of him and highly recommended.

This is truly a great performance of this masterpiece of dance and music. So proud of this generation to appreciate and respect the creativity that inspired this work in 1958. Hats off to Robert Prince, Jerome Robbins, Ballets U.S.A. of the 1950s and the New York Ballet of this decade!

This is just a great film of the New York City Ballet and the city it dances in. Great music, great dancing, great choreography and great settings. A bit like West Side Story with no plot.
