4.0 out of 5 stars It's about the nuts and bolts
As a beginning professional photographer one would need to avail himself of all the possible resources to make him succeed. PP of A, WPPI, DWF, ImagingUSA, are all great and probably all necessary. So are all the books out there on how to create beatiful photographs. But, if you don't know how to run your business, you're probably not going to make it even if your...

2.0 out of 5 stars Needs serious editing
Somewhere someone has taught this man how to write good sales copy, or possibly written it for him. Pity he never learned how to write a book. I usually read a book in a day - especially a photography or marketing book. I've had this one over a month, and just cannot force myself to read any further. I've skimmed through it and there seems to be some good, usable content...

As a beginning professional photographer one would need to avail himself of all the possible resources to make him succeed. PP of A, WPPI, DWF, ImagingUSA, are all great and probably all necessary. So are all the books out there on how to create beatiful photographs. But, if you don't know how to run your business, you're probably not going to make it even if your photography is stunning.
This book is about running your business. That's why there are no photographs in it. I recommend not just this book, but the other instructive materials that Mr. Provencher has produced. Yeah, he's not a wordsmith, but you can tell he is passionate about helping other photographers succeed in their business.
If you get this book, you'll become better at running your business, which will make you a better photographer because you'll have more clients to photograph.

Robert Provencher tells it like it is and cuts to the chase. His marketing knowledge and laid back style of writing make you feel like he's right there coaching you. He gives a gold mine of information that will change your photography business for the better.

If you're looking for another pretty picture book, this isn't the book for you. However, if you're hungry for the knowledge you'll need to become a professional photographer, you've found the right book!

This book is full of excellent, hard-won information and advice. Although Mr. Provencher has been running a studio for almost 30 years, his views are very contemporary. He's successful because he understands this business inside and out. Lucky for us, he shares all of his secrets in this book.

I really enjoyed the conversational writing style. Reading the book was like having a beer with a brilliant teacher and good friend and having all of your questions answered.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique and creative, May 18, 2007

This is a great read for someone who is thinking about starting their own photography business. All ideas are probably not applicable to everyone, but definetly has some unique ways to look at each situation. Written more from the creative side of things vs. strickly business - not technical. Cover of book gives you a good idea of how things are presented inside.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bottom line, May 28, 2009

The bottom line is: practice 'til you have a product to sell. Then find your market and sell like you never had time to take pictures. Learn and know your market and put your face/brand in front of the market just once--beginning the first day and continuing until tomorrow (not matter when tomorrow is, 'cause tomorrow never comes). And don't forget to make them happy. Good material, good direction and straight from the shoulder--no bs. Could have been edited/proofed a little tighter, but then that is what second editions are for. :) Thanks Rob

Rob, here s my book review, but I don't like giving out my email to join amazon books...

What a great book, I read it with in 24 hours of aquiring it. It is an easy read, full of information. I could tell straight away that the author has tried many marketing strategies over the past 3 decades and is saving me many hours and dollars by laying a simple path for my business to succeed. Armed with this book, and a 4 day seminar by Rob Provencher and James Hodgins, I am now making a living doing what I love to do...creating beautiful images, what could be better than that? Author Provencher provides very practical comments on running a studio. No BS is his theme and he does cut right to essential elements in capturing images, managing the shoot especially for children and weddings. Emphasis on keeping it simple but recognizing the importance of mastering the basics of photography. He believes this can be learned by anyone interested in doing the necessary study and practice to learn their craft. Describes the importance of working with clients as a very enjoyable part of his profession. Good references on being successful in business and life. Extensive index. I did lots of highlighting for my own use.
