Book Description

Expositor's Bible Commentary, The May 12, 1990
The Gold Medallion Award-winning Expositor's Bible Commentary is a major contribution to the study and understanding of the Scriptures. Providing pastors and Bible students with a comprehensive and scholarly tool for the exposition of the Scriptures and the teaching and proclamation of their message, this twelve-volume reference work has become a staple of seminary and college libraries and pastors' studies worldwide. The seventy-eight contributors come from the United States, Canada, England, Scotland, Australia, and New Zealand, and from many denominations, including Anglican, Baptist, Brethren, Methodist, Nazarene, Presbyterian, and Reformed. They represent the best in evangelical scholarship committed to the divine inspiration, complete trustworthiness, and full authority of the Bible. The Expositor's Bible Commentary uses the New International Version for its English text, but also refers freely to other translations and to the original languages. Each book of the Bible has, in addition to its exposition, an introduction, outline, and bibliography. Notes on textual questions and special problems are correlated with the expository units; transliteration and translation of Semitic and Greek words make the more technical notes accessible to readers unacquainted with the biblical languages. In matters where marked differences of opinion exist, commentators, while stating their own convictions, deal fairly and irenically with opposing views. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource, August 19, 2007
This review is from: The Expositor's Bible Commentary with New International Version: Genesis, Exodus, Levitcus, Numbers Volume 2 (Paperback)
This is partially a review of this particular commentary and partly a general review on the set. I used the Genesis commentary, as well as a bit of the Exodus one, in teaching a Sunday School class over the year. I preferred the Genesis commentary here over a second one I had purchased as a single volume on Genesis, finding this to be more helpful and fair to the text an at the same time being more concise.

However, as many of you may be reading this review with a mind to purchase the set, I can say that I'm very satisfied with my purchase of it. Every portion of the set has been quite helpful, and this is an amazingly simple and inexpensive way to assemble a good library of commentaries on the entire Bible. Obviously the commentaries are not as thorough as one may find in other series, such as the excellent (although not yet quite complete) "New International Commentary on the New Testament" or a similar series. However, for most Christians who teach or lead small groups in their churches, this set can serve as a great resource to get started with, and one that can easily be supplimented with specific volumes that treat a book of the Bible in greater depth as those books are needed. Additionally, this resource can be more useful than a larger volume in situations where one is interested in looking at a few chapters of scripture at a time, or where one just needs to understand what a verse or two might mean. Thanks to the very clear and practical verse by verse organization, it's a terrific tool to do just that.

Strongly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Commentary, November 17, 2007
This review is from: The Expositor's Bible Commentary with New International Version: Genesis, Exodus, Levitcus, Numbers Volume 2 (Paperback)
Great Commentary! Sometimes, though, it seems a little too detailed on points of little or no significance (but that is just my opinion) ... a very minute detail-oriented student would certainly appreciate this resource.

5.0 out of 5 stars My review of the commentary on Genesis, November 9, 2006
This review is from: The Expositor's Bible Commentary with New International Version: Genesis, Exodus, Levitcus, Numbers Volume 2 (Paperback)
I find the commentary very helpful in my study of Genesis. I want to know Dr Sailhamer's approach to this text and why. This commentary provides those details.
