Expository Preaching - Haddon Robinson,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Expository Preaching (Paperback)
This is the same book as the second edition of, "Biblical Preaching: The Development and Delivery of Expository Sermons," only it is published in Britton, and with a preface by J.A. Motyer, it also is published in paperback, and thus usually cheaper than the exclusively hardbound version sold in the states. If you are supposed to use "Biblical Preaching" for a class, note that while the content will be the same, the page numbers and format will be different. That said, it may well be one of the best books on preaching ever written. Robinson has taken the homiletical model presented by H Grady Davis in his "Design for Preaching" and combined it with a passion for exegesis which is infectious. Robinson's model has essentially two emphases;1. That every sermon should in its entirety be the communication of a single dominant idea. 2. That that idea should be the same idea the biblical author intended to convey through a particular passage of Scripture to its original audience. To present these emphases, he outlines 10 "stages" of sermon preparation, which summarize in excellent fashion the basic homiletical procedures proven over the ages. In addition, more so than most books on homiletics, he fills in his basic material with colorful writing and a multitude of examples which demonstrate the same exegetical passion which he attempts to implant in the reader. An incredible tool - no preacher should be without it! It may well be the best available starting point for a study of preaching. |
