Book Description

September 15, 2010
Travel adventure, love story and tracicomedy, Exposure is about wanting too much, choosing too little, and how a person can spend three weeks solid in Los Angeles buying a sleeping bag. Joel Magarey's life would be fine if not for one thing - his brain. Prey to strange compulsions and grandiose visions, 25-year-old Joel abandons Australia, his job in journalism and his girlfriend, the wise and tender Penny, and sets off on the global journey of his dreams. Those dreams hadn't included nearly drowning in Alaska, setting fire to his tent on the Bolivian altiplano or terrifying a Korean family with a highway panic attack. Fantasies spring to life in an Ecuadorean sexual paradise, while in a remote Zimbabwean village Joel finds a tentative peace. But memories keep pulling him back toward Penny - just as she is slipping away.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother!, December 29, 2010
This review is from: Exposure (Paperback)
Oh boy, where the hell do I start?

Maybe in the editing of myself, which unfortunately neither Mr. Magarey or his publisher deemed necessary to do in this book.

Honestly, I can't determine who is more at blame here. Joel Magarey is certainly two things: 1. Not a good writer and 2. A seemingly self-absorbed weasel whose OCD (one of the more compelling subjects of the book) certainly can't be entirely to blame for.

His publisher on the other hand deserves a worse critique in that while writers are very often too deep into the work and self-pity, if they decided to publish and print this steaming pile of poo the least they could have done is tone down the ad nauseam for all that is holy!

And then there is my question as to how did they get J.M. Coetzee to donate a pull-quote for the jacket. That is the only thing about this book that will continue to keep me up at night.

OR, this is a well veiled stab at the genre. Honestly, I don't think he's that smart.

Do yourself a favor, don't bother to crack the spine at your local bookseller, " let alone sink the dollars down for it.
