5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good!, March 27, 2002

I bought this CD on a whim, not expecting too much, but was amazed at how good it was! Heavy guitar riffs, mixed with slow parts, and off-beat drums. Vocals are screamed at times and sung in a melodic way at other times, but never does it get a poppy, light, or happy feel to it. Definitely one my all time favorite albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Investment, August 5, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Exposure (Audio CD)
Do you want a c.d. filled with power and harmonic melodies? Then this c.d. is for you. Thumb has everything it needs to continue to grow. There music is very powerfull and the vocals are beautiful. The songs relate to anything from the society we live in to their own personal beliefs. "This Life" is one of the best songs on the c.d. All have their spotlight, but this one really sticks out for me. All together, A SOLID investment!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nu-metal? Nope, something better., September 27, 2002
This review is from: Exposure (Audio CD)

Thumb just may be my favorite band, and that's mostly on the strength of their sophomore outing, "Exposure." It would be far too easy to compare these guys to Limp Bizkit; you have the metal guitar riffs, the rap-influenced grooves, and the turntables. However, this is a sound that Thumb had been pioneering since 93, and recording since '95, and as Victory Records (the premier American hardcore label at the time) was their American distributer, and Bizkit broke out of the Boston hardcore scene, you KNOW Fred Durst was aware of these guys.

The thing that sets Thumb apart from their rap-core peers is their lyricism. Rather than such sophomoric offerings as "Nookie" or "Cowboy," Thumb raps about themes of personal identity and strength, about stepping forward and dealing with reality on their own terms, and, of all things, vegetarianism (the band doesn't eat meat and is outspoken on issues of animal rights). Sort of like "To thyne own self be true" with a bit more kick.

But this lyrical intelligence doesn't come at the cost of agression; when these guys are going for the throat, you feel it. These guys could start a mosh pit at an anti-war demonstration at an elder hostel. From the opener, "Break Me," all the way through "Cavemen in Disguise," you're treated to song after song of grinding riffery. These guys are HEAVY.

My personal favorite tracks are "Sell Myself" (one of my favorite songs in any genre) and "Values." The former features a main riff that can only be described as "jarring" and a massive chorus, while the later grinds along in Korn-esq terriroty. Ironically enough, the first single from this CD (and the song featured on the bonus video), "Seize the Day," may be the worst peice on the disc- not that it's bad, per se, but that it has the misfortune of being considerably weaker than the two songs it's surrounded by. It's a great video, though (basically shows the band being beat up by an unreceptive audience), and its inclusion only adds to the value of this already amazing CD. If you have any interest in bands such as Korn or Limp Bizkit, buy this CD immediately, it'll open your eyes. If you don't, but just like good, heavy music, all the better. You won't be dissapointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Hardcore Band that no one has heard., June 7, 2001
By
This review is from: Exposure (Audio CD)
I first heard the cd back in college, when a a friend of mine let me listen to his copy. When I heard it I was overwhelmed. It was intense music that blew the likes of Limp Bizkit out of the water. If you are looking for a great hardcore band this is the band. It is my favorite cd.
