Customer Reviews

A file needed during installation was not located in the directory it was supposed to be in.

Description says it comes with low profile bracket but it is not included... Also, it won't fit in a low profile case even if it did have one.
Rob Miranda
Excellent product and easy to fit, instructions manual is confusing but over great value and works great.

I have 2 problems with this card. First, in low profile computers there is insufficient room between the top of the card and the computer case to allow you to plug in the cable for an additional 2 ports or other devices. The USB 3.0 internal socket needs to be moved to the back edge or to the face of the card to provide room to plug the expansion cable in. There should not be any connectors along the top of the card, including power connectors. Second, this card was not recognized by the VIA USB 3.0 ePCI drivers that I have been using nor were the included drivers of any help. The instructions that were included refer to the Chinese version of Windows to a window or Control Panel item that is not present in the American version of Windows. I have not found a way to use this card, so it is back in the shipping envelope and sitting on my shelf. This item was shipped from Hong Kong, China and arrived here within 10 days. I believe that the seller has good intentions. Either the hardware or the software need more work.

Plug it in, does not work. Slap my forehead remembering that I forgot the power cable. Try again, and it just works. No software to download, no hassle.
The CD that came in the padded envelope had a bunch of divots in the back side since it was not protected well enough during shipping.
The CD read ok anyway. The drivers are all windows/mac, usless for Linux. The instructions read as if they were translated by google translate, incomprehensible. The screen shots in the instructions were all in Chinese.
I did not take a star away for this because the CD & instructions were completely unnecessary for Linux.
It did come with a half height bracket that was unnecessary.

I ordered this card specifically because of the Renesas chipset because the VIA chipset will not work with my computer(Dell XPS-8300). I had tried two different cards with the VIA chipset and neither worked. This on the other had worked flawlessly! I'm even using the 20pin header to add two more USB 3 ports to the front of my computer. Great product!

Installing the driver's software was not as we normally expect, I had to look into the mini CD folder and have to install various executable files to get it finally to run. After doing so an unexpected Bluetooth functionality became available as an ICON but does nothing.

(Updated 20-JAN-15.) I was having a lot of intermittent problems with my old USB 2.0 front-panel internal card reader so I decided to get a brand new USB 3.0 card and front panel. I was looking for a card with the NEC/Renesas chipset, and good reviews at a reasonable price. This card was really a good deal.

I have a Gigabyte EX38-DS4 motherboard and Windows 8.0 64-bit. I just inserted the new controller card, attached the new front panel, and powered the PC back on. All the drivers were installed automatically. There is no need to track down a manufacturer in China to get driver updates because this uses standard drivers for this chip set. There is also an .exe on the included CD-ROM which will install the standard drivers from Renesas in case you wish to use them instead of the ones that come with Windows. These are digitally signed by Renesas.

I also bought a "Silverstone Tek Premium 3.5-Inch Front Bay Card Reader with SDXC and USB 3.0 Support with Extra Silver Front Panel (FP37B)" at the same time and attached it to this card. I noticed that the Silverstone card reader would intermittently disconnect after anywhere from a few seconds to a couple hours. The mounted drive letter would disappear, and I had to power the PC off and back on to get the card reader to work again. I can't say for sure, but my best guess after a lot of investigation is that the problem is with the card reader, not this interface card. If interested, you can read the details in my review of the Silverstone card reader which includes some tips. (That review has a similar name and date.)

This will be a short review but this works out of the box in Linux. The chipset it uses, NEC, is 100% in the USB 3.0 spec so it works flawlessly. I'm betting it would in OSX and probably doesn't need driver in Windows.

The first card I got before this one didn't have a chip that was 100% compliant with the USB 3.0 spec and even with the windows driver windows users were reporting weird speed fluctuations. ALWAYS BUY ELECTRONIC DEVICES THAT ARE TO SPEC. That is all I can say.

Shipping on this was a little but to have a working card it was worth it. It might not be the case if sellers have this in the country your ordering from but mine came from Asia. I can't fault the card for the slow shipping though.

Everytime I try to write to my external drive through this card, the driver crashes, the controller resets (in device manager) and I get an error stating that something went wrong and that the file location is no longer available. I tested a local USB2 port, no issues. I tested another machine with USB 3.0, no issue. I don't know if this is the driver, or the card at this point. I don't know if I got a DOA, or what, but I'm not very satisfied with this product so far. I plan to follow up with the seller to see what we can do.
