Almost 2x faster than Firewire...,

I tested this using a Lexar Pro 4GB 300x CF Card and a MacBook Pro running 10.4.10 (1st gen, so 400Mbs Firewire Port). I loaded the CF card by shooting 100 RAW files with a Canon 5D.
Downloading 100 images with a Lexar CF Firewire Reader took 162 seconds. With this ExpressCard Adapter the same 100 images took 86 seconds -- so this product is almost 2x faster. I was a little confused by the description, but realized that if you are only using CF cards, this is all you need. Worked great right out of the box -- no drivers, no other accessories required. A lot smaller than most other readers, too, so great for travel.

Forces me to restart,

I have a MacBook Pro, and after reading many reviews bought this product. The transfer speed is great, when it works. The trouble I have is every time I insert a card into the reader, I get that grey screen that tells me to hold down the power button to restart my computer, in about 6 different languages. I restart, after loosing progress on the things this "grey screen of death" as interrupted, then I am able to read the card just fine. This is a horrible manufacture default. I'd give this product 1/2 a star if i could and if i could take a screen shot when that grey screen appears, i would but this freezes my computer.
I don't even know if what I received was a Delkin model as there is no marking on my reader at all. Bottom line: Do not buy this product.

Correct item, fast transfer, doesn't completely seat against side of MacBook Pro,

Amazon did ship the right item, and at a good price as well. It transfers images much faster than the native software for the Canon XTi, but I wish it would rest completely against the side of the computer. (see uploaded image) It's still better than a separate reader and a cord, but I would feel better about leaving the adapter in my 15" MacBook Pro if didn't stick out approx. 1/8th of an inch.

This product is convenient except for the protrusion which is unavoidable. Not practical to leave in place so it requires being carried seperately from the laptop. It is fast and works well out of the box.

I ordered this item on 29-Apr-2007, though I was concerned I'd receive the wrong item. Fortunately the correct item (i.e. the Compact Flash reader) was shipped thus indicating Amazon has resolved the mixup that many reviewers here reported.
As for the device itself, it works great. I have a MacBook Pro and the card reader worked perfect out of the box without any need to install drivers. Best of all, downloads are blazing fast, far faster than a one-year old USB 7-in-1 media card reader I used to use.

Easy to use and very fast data transfers. Worked flawlessly first time on MacBook Pro under OS X 10.4.10. A little carrying cassette would be nice, but I just keep it in a zip-lock bag when not in use.

It's FAST! The problem is that it is the only thing that has created a system level kernal panic crash of my MacBook Pro in the last 2 years. There is a very specific sequence you have to use when using this card. I have not used it a lot yet, but it seems that you have to put the expresscard in the computer w/o the CF card in it. Then insert the CF card in the reader, being careful not to eject the reader from the slot while doing this. If you have the card in the reader before putting the reader in the computer, it will not work. I pulled the card out and re-inserted it and it crashed my computer. NOT COOL! It did not come with any driver installers or make any suggestions to do so. I'm going to continue to look online to see if there are any.
As of right now, I have to say go with a FW or USB reader until the bugs are worked out. It may simply be a driver issue. I don't know enough about these things to be sure. PS. Mine does not look like the one in the pic. Instead of the white piece on the end, it's black.

After uploading 8GB CF cards via USB, this speed of this card reader is just amazing. It works great in my MacPro laptop -- just pop it in and in a few seconds OS X mounts your card.
I've carted this card around with me on a few trips and have abused it a bit more than I should have, but it is still solid and working great. The only thing I dislike is that it is difficult to change CF cards without the entire unit coming out. When you insert the new card, it usually triggers the spring mechanism to release the card. This is only a minor annoyance, though. This card is well worth the investment -- I should have bought it long ago.

Compact Flash Express Card,
This review is from: Expresscard to CF Adapter Mac & PC (DDEXP34-CF-1) (Personal Computers)
Simple, but useful. It's easier to put the CF card in the adapter first, then insert the adapter into the Express Card slot. It uploads 8 MB Raw files in 1 second. 30 images then load in half a minute -- about 10 times faster than USB 2. Very helpful device.

Transferring 4 GBs of RAW picture files to my MBP is wicked fast. Loses a star for not including a case of any kind. This goes in my camera bag and there is nothing to protect the male/female contact pins, even though they are recessed a bit.
Amazon did send the correct item (unlike some others), but they mailed it in an padded envelope instead of a box, and the packaging was crushed and torn. |
