Book Description

October 11, 2011
Vivid color, specially commissioned artisanal pieces, and exquisite midcentury furnishings define the work of interior designer Amy Lau. Inspired by her passion for nature and abstract art, she incorporates elements of both into every space while tailoring each experience to the personalities and lifestyles of her clients.

Thirteen residential interiors, from glass-walled city apartments to demure Hamptons cottages, are presented in luscious full-color photography; lifely text peppered with design tips captures the designer’s energy and explains her creative process. Prior to opening her firm in 2001, Lau managed the prestigious Lin/Weinberg Gallery in New York City—specialisits in twentieth-century furniture and decorative objects—and her love of this period permeates her work to this day. Her designs are sophisticated yet exuberant and full of impeccably restored original pieces yet entirely livable.

Amy Lau’s belief in curating rather than merely decorating spaces results in collections arranged to complement the most unique feature of each individual object, color schemes that relate to a property’s location or enhance a specific view, and in one-of-a-kind textiles designed to subtly mirror a room’s other artwork or furnishings. A final chapter details the artists, movements, places, and visionaries that have had the largest influence on Lau’s development of her own unique style, and encourages all interested in design to create a similar catalog of admired pieces in order to begin refining and defining their own tastes.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"She exhibits real range as a designer — stretching well beyond Pop Art-hued modernism into brilliant moments of tranquility and sophistication, always with a robust affinity for the natural world." —1stdibs.com

"Vibrantly personalized spaces define the work of Amy Lau, who founded her eponymous interior design firm in 2001 after serving as design director for the Lin/Weinberg Gallery in New York City. She channels her love of art and nature into unique installations, fabrics, and textures paired with exquisitely curated mid-century furniture. Expressive Modern: The Interiors of Amy Lau showcases 13 residential interiors interspersed with profiles on some of her favorite artists and designers and with Lau’s product, including fabric for S. Harris, tile for Kohler Co., and wallpaper for Maya Romanoff. Also look for commissions for Elie Tahari, Bergdorf Goodman, and the Dexter dining room of the Metropolitan Home Showtime House, all narrated by Lau’s grounded insight into transplanting her tenets of design into your own reality." —Vintage + Modern

5.0 out of 5 stars Mid century furnishings that are timeless today November 8, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Ms. Lau has a sense of color and style that really resonates with me. I just purchased a home built in 1960 with great 1960's character. I was stumped for design ideas as my current furniture wouldn't do the home justice. I saw the cover of her book, fell in love, looked for it at a book store (I've been tricked before by pretty covers only to find that there is nothing of any interest inside the book), loved it even more and then ordered it. Who would have thought that the elements of glamour, comfort, and warmth would marry so easily? The interior design is so well done that just by looking at the photographs you can see which characteristics of the elements used deliver the look. I will be looking for curvy and unusual shaped furniture with legs, to help convey the same fluid and airy impact that Ms. Lau so effortlessly designs with 60's period pieces. If you like retro period then this is a wonderful book for you. This is not Sister Parish.

If you are serous about design, you need this book on your shelf. Ms. Lau cuts through the mundane and gives us real useable tools and inspiration beyond what I anticipated. Color, custom designs, a warm and thoughtful environment are just a few things Ms. Lau's clients are lucky enough to receive from her and we are lucky to now have the inside track.
