5.0 out of 5 stars *Majestic*, January 4, 2010
This review is from: Exquisite Corpse (Audio CD)
This is an amazing EP which I listen to quite frequently. One of my favorite pieces of music from the decade. And I've had the privilege to see this inspiring band live many times and they are wonderful..

"Stars" is beautifully ambient that puts you into a dream-like haze.

"Elephants" is a great up-tempo song that makes you want to dance with your shadow.

"Billie Holiday"s a pretty acoustic ballad that transforms into Mary Wells' "My Guy". Beautifully done, Warpaint makes it their own, giving it new life.

"Beetles" is pure magic. Starting off as a dance-song with heavy rhythm, soon morphing into a hypnotic break with haunting vocals and starting right back into making you want to shake your ass again. Perfectly executed.

Then, their is "Burgundy" with it's intro that makes you feel like you've been transported into the Ethers. Maybe, my favorite song on this EP.. Just amazing.

"Krimson" is the cherry on top. Hypnotizing you with a wonderful intro that transforms into another great 'shake your ass' song.

Overall, I think this EP is brilliant and cannot wait for Warpaint's full-length album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seriously, no review? Amazing EP, Amazing Band, September 7, 2011
First of all, hi. If you already own "The Fool" and you like warpaint, stop reading this review right now and just go ahead and get this. It's worth the price and it's almost as long as a full-length album anyway.

Wow, this is incredible. I am actually quite surprised that there are no reviews on this album. I could have sworn someone had reviewed this. Anyway, this EP is special, because none of the songs on this are on the album, "The Fool." Each song is good and there are no fillers. NO FILLERS. I swear.

I have owned The Fool for a while and i've heard great things about Exquisite Corpse so I went ahead and payed the straight up 6 dollars to get it. It was hard considering i'm the person that likes to wait for an album to go on sale. Lets just say I hardly buy EPs. BUT WOW, this is wonderful. It catches you right from the beginning and takes you on a journey right to the last 30 seconds of the last song. Utter brilliance. The lead singer's, Emily Kokal's, hypnotic voice along with the dreamy, sometimes very intense guitar really gets your attention. And lets not forget the bass and drums, always pumping in the background driving the song on.

Don't get me wrong, not all songs are loud and pumping - Warpaint has their soft side as well. The album starts out with soft eerie guitars and Emily Kokal's voice floating over the top of the beautiful arrangements that Warpaint creates. I'm not big on female singers, so they have to be very good to get my attention, but heck this is a four-piece all girl band and it rocks. So, yeah, stop listening to Ke$ha or Lady Gaga or whatever the crap Girl Singer music your listening to right now. Just STOP it. If you want to listen to girls really just downright rocking it - well buy this. flip yeah.

It is too bad this EP came out before this band was well known because it is unbelievable. This has to be some of the most unique music released in a while and one of my favorite CD's ever, even though it is only an EP with a handful of songs!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspired debut EP!, November 24, 2010
This review is from: Exquisite Corpse (Audio CD)
In anticipation of release of Warpaint's first full length album, I kept wondering how they were going to treat this overlooked but inspired EP. Having seen the band live and watched them tear it up as an opening band for Sonic Youth, I hoped that they would re-record one of the tracks on this collection. Upon release of the new album and finding no such re-recorded tracks, I realized that this EP was in no way a rush job or in any way needed improvement. While not quite as long obviously, this album may top the incredible full length debut garnering such high praise.

The opening "Stars" may be the best track this band has written. Unsettling yet utimately optimistic, this briefly sketched tale of a love affair turning stale proceeds with a slowly building intensity. "Elephants" starts off sounding like a Local Natives/Vampire Weekend rip-off before the vocals drop in and the vicious rhythm section lends the song an frantic edge. "Billie Holiday" shows that even when acoustic, the band can create melodies that are disturbing while at the same time beautiful. And battling "Stars" for EP highlight is the Blondie-inspired "Beetles", which veers all over the musical map in a dizzying frenzy.

This band has everything going for it. Strong lyrics, inspired vocalists, guitarists not content to play it safe, and a rhythm section better that 95% of the pairings out there. If you liked "The Fool", you will love this EP!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD for todays music., January 4, 2012
This review is from: Exquisite Corpse (Audio CD)
Today's music is horrible. This has been the only CD not band that has caught my attention now days. Their second album is not so great, but its alright. The sound in this album is very capturing, great for a change in today's music. If your tired of listening to garbage these days I recommend you listen to some real music for a change.

This band is amazing.Have this weird eery chill vibe going on that runs through your bones when you listen to them on full blast.Their lastest album is like another Extended play of Exquiste Corpse. They manage a way to change their sound and yet they still sound the same. Awesome band highly recommend

5.0 out of 5 stars Magically Delicious, August 22, 2010

This review is from: Exquisite Corpse (Audio CD)
The only negative thing about "Exquisite Corpse" is that it is simply an EP and far too short. This band creates music that is hauntingly beautiful. Listening to samples of the songs only allows a brief snapshot; please know that the songs transition in tempo and volume, each with its own personality. Warpaint definitely loves their reverb as well as using vocal effects, which helps to create that soft feeling of transcending space and time when you listen to their music. Warpaint has an amazing grasp of harmony and melody; they know how to keep the music interesting. Each song is so spellbinding in that shoegazer, trance inducing cloud of brilliance, allowing you to float between the notes and totally lose yourself in the music. Expand your mind and sonic sensibilities and buy this EP!
