Book Description

The contours of the female body are a masterpiece of nature and were the inspiration for the title of this book. There are an infinite number of ways to represent this beauty. The photographer's role is to create work that is appealing, fitting, and meaningful. This book takes a two-pronged approach: first by teaching the academic and second by encouraging hands-on creativity.

This guide presents the material through five main chapters: Composition, Technique, Posing, Self-Expression (Style), and Shooting Assignments.

The instruction is intended to be accessible to any novice with a serious interest in the composition and posing of female nudes. You do not need to be an artist or a photographer to understand the material but a basic understanding of camera operation is assumed. It is written for the uninitiated and for those who have no more than a modest amount of experience with photography or composition.

The book begins with a discussion of visual literacy and its importance. Next are the abstract elements of composition, such as lines, colors, value, mass, depth, illusion, time, and motion. A section on design principles instructs in the assembly of these elements. Visual pathways, including cyclical, triangular, and others, are explained. Methods of design such as the rule of thirds, the golden mean, diagonal method, armatures, and forty-five degrees are all described and illustrated. The design instruction is rounded out with a discussion of commonalities and pitfalls in the design methods.

The various camera techniques range from controlling framing, focus, and lighting. There is information about high-key, low-key, and minor-key lighting, complete with histograms and diagrams that show where the lights are set up. The section on post-processing mentions the importance of vignettes, contrast, monochrome (black and white) images, color mapping, the zone system, isolating images, and making composites (montages). The book includes 100 examples of nude poses (in addition to the numerous other samples) grouped into sections, such as standing, furniture, and props.

The section on style addresses why we make a photograph and what constitutes an artistic body of work. There is a discussion of how your choice of genre, whether it is pinup, glamour, or fine art, figure study, or commercial design, influences your composition. The examination of style would not be complete without addressing how to analyze your work and sources of inspiration. The shooting assignments are real-world exercises that provide an opportunity to put what you have learned into practice. The book is rounded out with a glossary, index, and bibliography.

About the Author

A. K. Nicholas is an American photographer with a passion for collaborating with models and sharing knowledge. His vision is colored by being raised abroad and traveling to dozens of countries, including museum visits and other cultural experiences. In the Middle East, he observed how women's bodies were hidden from public view; in most of Europe, there was little prudishness. In his youth, he put in his dues clerking and staffing the darkroom of a camera store. His background includes an art degree, a long stint as a freelance artist, and a career as a professional photographer. His first camera was hand-made from an oatmeal box for a middle-school project. His first nude shoot was a complete surprise to him when a classmate in college assumed that his invitation to model meant for her to be nude. In the decades since then, he has photographed hundreds of nude models for publication in books, articles, as framed prints, product advertisements, stock agencies, and gallery exhibits. His exhibit work consists mainly of photomontage, sometimes printed life-sized. These days, when he picks up a camera, it is to fulfill a personal calling and not the agenda of a client. He is happiest when working on creative projects and devotes as much time as possible to new ideas. His second favorite thing is helping others further their artistic endeavors. He writes to help you learn from his experience, including how to avoid some common mistakes and to encourage your creativity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent, visually pleasing, instructive June 23, 2012
By Bflo
Format:Paperback
As a moderately experienced photographer of female nudes, I'm always looking for books that can help me take my craft to the next level. "Exquisite Curves" definitely earns a place on my bookshelf. Nicholas takes a decidedly academic approach in the book's first half, explaining abstract concepts of photography that aren't going to blow you away with excitement, but the text still manages to be engaging and quick to read -- and I'm sure the material will, over time, improve my composition skills. Then we get to the second half, where the book really shines. There's a lot to appreciate, but I especially liked the discussion of commercial work, the lighting diagrams, the section on framing, the list of inspiring photographers, and the helpful tip about how to create that "sweaty look" on a model. Nicholas's photos are certainly a strong suit; his models are attractive and they do a great job of illustrating the many points the author makes in the text. Overall, an instructive, inspiring work. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not just for the image creator October 21, 2012
Format:Paperback
I dearly love figure photography - but only as a consumer of images, not a creator. And, since I enjoy it so very much, this title looked interesting, as a way to help me see more deeply into the pictures I enjoy and get a fuller appreciation of the ways that figure can be used and presented.

This book came through, better than I could have hoped. Although aimed at photographers, its content can help anyone who enjoys the human form in art. It isolates the components of an image, including structure, geometry, lighting, color, and contrast. Along with the basics that apply to any image, it goes into issues specific to figure as well: pose, ornametation, and the specifics that make faces so subtly expressive. Numerous examples illustrate each point, showing many different ways a given concept can be applied. Even discussion aimed directly at working photographers, like camera technique for making a model's legs seem longer, help me understand the choices that went into each finished work.

I could have asked for a bit more emphasis on handling of different skin tones, and any discussion at all of male vs. female models - a topic of crucial importance, given how differently the two can be seen. Still, what's here offers plenty of insight.

"I know what I like" is an honest enough statement, but simplistic. The thoughtful viewer wants more: I want to know why I like it, too. This book helps a lot in understanding the appeal (or lack) in any image.
