The sumptious sound of Gardiner's English Baroque Soloists opens this disc with clarion precision. From the very beginning, they are the epitome of perfect baroque playing - never getting a microbeat behind Gardiner's fiendishly speedy baton, and are particularly delightful when tripping through Mozart's Exsultate Jubilate accompanying the sublime Ms McNair. Sylvia McNair, although comparatively rarely recorded, produces a wonderfully enthusiastic performance, using all of the vocal devices in her armoury (listen out for the whispered phrase in Silete Venti, the first cantata on the disc). While the Handel is lovely, however, the Mozart is truly spectacular, showing McNair's talent for semi-quaver articulation, particularly in the famous Alleluia which concludes the disc. Overall, an excellent contribution to the collection of any fan of authentic Mozart.

J'ai eu beaucoup de mal il y a quelques mois à trouver cet enregistrement extraordinaire du Silete Venti (Silence Vent!) d'Haendel, oeuvre peu connue du saxon et pourtant absolument sublime ; oeuvre de quasi maturité dont on ne sait en définitive pas grand chose, (aucun vrai développement dans la biographie de Keates) ; supposée écrite trois ans avant le couronnement de George II, pour une soprano d'opéra possédant une sérieuse technique vocale.

" L'orchestre commence à la façon d'une ouverture française, avec une musique lente, majestueuse, homophone, aux rythmes pointés. D'emblée, Haendel joue avec son public en introduisant sans prévenir trois moments piano. Une fugue tourbillonnante est finalement réduite au silence par la soliste, grâce à qui la douceur s'installe et la paix règne. Le deuxième mouvement est une aria da capo, où Haendel dépeint l'extase qui est l'amour de Jésus. Le troisième mouvement, plutôt bref, est un récitatif poignant menant à un quatrième mouvement qui passe de la tempête à la rêverie pastorale. Les vents reviennent dans la section centrale de cette aria da capo, mais ce ne sont plus que de douces brises. Le dernier mouvement, un ' alléluia quelque peu bizarre et totalement virtuose termine ce motet remarquable de manière étincelante " écrit Jeremy Summerly.

Reste l'interpétation lumineuse de Sylvia McNair dirigée par le non moins éclairé Gardiner. Sur un tempo très cadencé, l'orchestre, particulièrement coloré, placé en quasi retrait du chant, joue une partition éblouissante, j'insiste, au point de faciliter une mémorisation quasi mécanique des arias et principalement du bouleversant "Date serta, date flores" .

Chacun l'aura compris : un grand enregistrement.

La suite est franchement très "secondaire" ce qui n'enlève pourtant rien à sa qualité.

Toutefois "l'Exsultate jubilate" de Mozart, pièce pourtant si belle, trouve ici difficilement sa place, et pour être encore très franc, son interprétation n'est pas, de mon point de vue, la meilleure ...qui reste celle de Carolyn Sampson chez Hyperion dirigée par Robert King. Mais tout cela est affaire de goût et je ne cherche à en convaincre personne !
