I purchased identical unit but branded "Southwire" for the purpose of helping to insulate my house. Indoors it easily locates cold spots and outdoors the same spots show up as warmer.

This model has a narrower beam than most which makes it better for this purpose. The twin laser beams bracket the sensitive area. It is also very fast and updates about 6 times per second so you can wave it around and locate cold or hot spots. Keep in mind it averages what it sees in its sensor and the lasers approximately reveal the size of the spot. It has a one inch spot at one foot (2 inches at 2 feet and so on). The lasers converge at an optimum measuring distance but in fact you can measure at pretty much any distance (even clouds!) but not through water or fog (it will then just measure the water or fog).

Cautions: It isn't actually measuring temperature. This type of device uses what is known as a "microbolometer" and what it measures is longwave infrared in the 8 to 15 micron wavelength (visible light being 0.65 to 0.4 micron). It is calibrated to temperature IF the thing being measured is emitting infrared at the same rate the thermometer expects it -- a function called "emissivity". Water, and most water-bearing substances, have nearly perfect emissivity (0.95 to 0.99) and that includes snow and ice. The worst is shiny metal with emissivity of only 0.1, and that means shiny metal could be ten times hotter than the display says it is -- but if you need to do that, simply adjust the "emissivity" down to 0.1 but watch out for reflections -- the thermometer may well be measuring something reflected rather than the shiny metal.

Another caution is if the hot spot is smaller than the "beam".

This Infrared Thermometer is a great tool for several reasons. The most practicle is for the house to see where cold air is getting in your house around your windows.

Durability - This seems very well put together and heavy duty. I don't expect this to fall apart anytime soon.

Uses - I always want to make sure my grill is hot before I put my steaks on so I use this to see how hot my grill is. I was able to read over 1500 degrees on my Napoleon grill (infrared side burner) so I know that this IR reader can reach those temperatures.

Well made and very handy for several uses. I highly recommend this if you need something to read over 1000 degrees.
