This is the most inexpensive device of its kind on Amazon - a guaranteed accurate hygro-thermometer. The outside sensor in the product photo is attached to a small cylinder-shaped arm affixed to the side of the unit.

All the twenty dollar type units that provide temperature and humidity levels will generally be in the correct range yet not with precision. Notice how the diligent reviewers of those cheap units cite comparisons with various hygro-thermometers to each other. In those citations, cheap units don't agree and it's impossible to know which is more correct.

Better to get one accurate unit and if needed, compare the others against it. This unit is accurate - guaranteed per the product description. The sensor is always on the outside of highly accurate units, and normally such units cost even more than this one.

My experience with this unit is positive. It's more accurate than the temperature gauges in my house that control heating and cooling, for example. I don't bother with other humidity reporting units because cheaper ones are notoriously inaccurate.

Extech makes many high-tech measuring devices, especially multimeters. The company is well-known to house inspectors and electricians.

This was extremely accurate out of the box. The temperature was accurate to .1 degree, with reference to a high end Netatmo unit. The humidity was off by 4%, which is within the mfg. specs. I was able to calibrate it to 100% accuracy using a Boveda One Step Kit.

The surprising thing is how responsive this thing is. Just getting near it will change the readings, virtually instantly, no lag time. I think the fact this has an exterior sensor makes it far more responsive than one which is built into the unit, which many are.

A note on the picture. It looks much larger than it is, which is 4.25"x4", I wanted to show detail so I got in close.

Awesome! I have a Fluke 971 professional handheld Temp & Humid meter. They are within 1% of each other. Cough-up the extra money and buy it, you’ll love it!

This is one of those rare things where I found that the extra expense was WAY worth it. Saw one at Walmart for $9.00 (out of stock, of course) so I went online and got this, thinking I could return it anyway. I will not give it up now. This is a large and very accurate item and I found the instruction manual very interesting. After using this, I went and got a humidifier for the winter heating seasons. No more dry nose, etc.. I don't generally write reviews, but this is an exception. For me, this purchase was an unexpected home run. Note: get the exact one with the right order #; there's a cheaper one you don't want. See the other reviews for why.

I've owned this for about 6 months now and I am happy with it, mine seems to be accurate. I wanted to monitor humidity levels in my house, they get very low in the winter when the heat is on. I recently had trouble with mold in my workshop this summer so now I am concerned about mold starting in the house so I am buying another one to monitor the bathroom area and one for a common living area. I am also concerned about air circulation so if I have proper circulation the two meters should balance out sometime after a shower. As someone else commented, the cheap units are very inaccurate on humidity readings so if it's important you better buy a good one even though the cost hurts a little.

I use this with a drying chamber for sausage and such. It seems a little pricey; however, it has worked very well for me. It has been very accurate with temperature and humidity which is critical since the chamber must maintain a consistent range on both. It also offers a max and min function for both temp and humidity that is easy to reset whenever you like. This is very useful if you wish to get the average temp/humidity to help make sure you are keepin' it where ya want. If it didn't cost so much, I would give it 5 stars. I recommend it and would buy it again.

Out of the box the unit would not power up (or perhaps just the display simply would not power up). After replacing the battery, which I thought must be DOA, I discovered that the display powered up after pressure was applied near the battery compartment. Upon further troubleshooting, the sweet (dead) spot turned out to be an area on the left size of the bezel just below where the probe is mounted. Applying very slight pressure at this point shut the unit down. (Again, it could be just the display losing power.) I could get the unit to stay on, but the slightest touch to the left bezel again shut it down.

I don't object to overpriced Chinese-made goods--it's today's reality--I do object, though, to sloppy quality assurance. (Neither the shipping box nor the unit packaging showed any signs of distress, by the way.)

Thanks to Amazon's no-hassle return policy, this unit is being sent back. Since I'm desperate for a hygo-thermometer that is easy to read, I ordered a replacement unit. I'll give it another try.

Update 2015-03-08: The replacement unit from Amazon powered up without issue. In comparing the temperature reading to three other hygro-thermometers, it was within 1 degree. The humidity reading is within 4 percent of my other units, which is within tolerance. The unit responds very quickly to temperature changes. After three weeks in my wine cabinet, I am satisfied with the performance.

Further, I'm impressed that a rep from Extech Instruments offered to assist. (See comment to original post.) The value of good customer support cannot be overstated. I've changed my rating from 1 to 4. Keeping me from rating a 5: Value. At a Chinese labor rate of about $2.50/hour, I expect a better price.
