Extech 445815 Humidity Meter with Alarm and Remote Probe

Amazon.com

445815
Built-in stand for sitting on a desk, but also wall mountable (view larger).

Ideal for monitoring environmental conditions (temperature, humidity and dew point) in laboratories, storage areas, manufacturing assembly areas and other controlled environments, the Extech 445815 Hygro-Thermometer Humidity Meter features large triple display for easy monitoring of relative humidity, temperature, and dew point.

You can set its alarm to warn you--both audibly and visually--when adverse conditions occur, helping you avoid mold caused by high humidity or static electricity from low humidity. And unlike other humidity indicators, the 445815 calculates and displays the Dew Point reading which is a calculation of temperature and humidity and used to determine when condensation will occur.

The 445815 has a remote probe that can either clip onto the meter or extend on an 18-inch cable, enabling you to take measurements behind walls, in ducts, or other areas that are difficult to access. The meter measures humidity from 10 to 99% RH and temperature from 14 to 140 degrees F (-10 to 60 degrees C) with an accuracy of ±4 percent RH; ±1.8 degrees F.

The 445815 can be field calibrated with the optional calibration kit and has a rear calibration adjustment pot with max/min and a reset function. An optional NIST Traceable Certification satisfies ISO and other regulatory body requirements for product accuracy and traceability to nationally recognized reference standards.

Measuring 4.3 x 3.9 x 0.78 inches (HxWxD), the 445815 weighs 6 ounces, and is powered by two AAA batteries. It's backed by a one-year limited warranty.

I am a Chocolate Chef (Chocolatier) professionally, and temperature and humidity is vitally important to my product turning out. We purchased this item in hopes of the helping to locate humid spots in our production kitchen and found that this meter was perfect for that.
The probe is fantastic and incredibly accurate, and the meter refreshes at an incredible rate. We ended up buying two more for the retail area, and the storage area. Fantastic product!

I am disappointed to find that the calibration on this product is ineffective. The "pot" (potentiometer) for humidity adjustment can be continuously turned either clockwise or counter-clockwise. There are no stops in either direction. With each full turn, a very quiet click is heard, which is also worrisome. So it is impossible to tell when it is maximally or minimally adjusted.

I used a calibration kit (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000A3UBLA/ref=oss_product) to test this item. Half-turns of the pot, and adjustment periods of 12 hours after each half-turn, produced readings of between 71% and 73%. I could never get it to read 75.5%, as it should have.

Granted, the calibration kit made testing the item difficult. The plastic bag in which it comes is too small to hold the entire item. So I put the probe into the bag, sealed it as well as I could, and then put the item plus the kit's plastic bag all into another, larger plastic bag and sealed that completely. I allowed longer adjustment periods because of this departure from the recommended procedure. (I feel the adjustment periods suggested by the calibration kit -- 24-26 hours -- are unnecessarily long, given how quickly this monitor responds to change.)

Extech makes its own calibrators, which don't require these machinations, but they are absurdly expensive. The use of another maker's calibration kit may throw off readings, but it doesn't change the fact that this monitor cannot be reliably adjusted.

The manufacturer's technical service person was not helpful. He acknowledged that the pot has no stops but insisted it is effective anyway. That is not my finding. I am keeping the item but using it with the knowledge that it is 2-3 percentage points low, at least in the low-70s range.

I bought two meters for use in my basement and shop. I took them to work and compared them to a recently calibrated / certified meter in a room @ 50% RH and 72F. They both read within 1% RH and 1F of the certified meter. I did not check them at other conditions. However, given my work experience with Extech equipment, I believe they would be accurate.

The low price, Dew Point alarm, min/max temp/RH, and easy to read numbers make this a outstanding instrument. I'm a Ph.D. organic chemist and a stickler for accuracy. High marks for scientific work or instruments don't come easily from me.

On a side note, the analog Relative Humidity gauges found on most consumer products are worthless.

I already have a nice synthetic material dial hygrometer and decided to try a digital hygrometer and purchased the Extech 445815 after a lengthy research on the subject. I like the price for performance the wired sensor and dew point display features most desktop/wall hygrometers don't have.

There are a few other in similar price range. But this one is the only one with a Large LCD Dispay and remote humidity probe. I also thought it came with a factory calibration certificate. It did not. For that I have to mail this unit to extech and pay additional $100....
So that makes this a $150 unit.
In that price range there are a few others that come with remote probe, cal certificate and even usb interfaces.

By moving this Extech Humidity Meter we can now see the humidity in each room of our house and found that the humidity was a bit too high in the basement. We are now installing a dehumidifier downstairs to take care of the humidity problem. By keeping the Meter in the basement after the dehumidifier is working we should be able to set the dehumidifier at the correct setting to achieve the humidity level we need since the dehumidifier does not have a meter on it. It will take the guess work out of setting the dehumidifier.

I have bought 4 of these from Amazon. I have calibrated all four for temperature accuracy and they all consistently read the same within acceptable limits. However, with one of the units I cannot adjust the relative humidity. I cannot correct the humidity reading with the adjustment. The dew point reading depends upon the accuracy of the relative humidity and so the dew point is in error. I need a good dew point reading to prevent mold in some air handling equipment so this unit forces me to guess on its error and estimate the dew point. Not a good feeling. Some people might think three out of four is not bad but I don't see why I have to put up with the time and trouble caused by poorly manufactured and tested products! One star, less if I could!
