CT20
Lightweight and pocket-sized (view larger).

Ideal for electricians, alarm, cable installers and others who routinely need to check circuits for continuity and also identify cables and wires, the Extech CT20 Continuity Tester Pro enables you to quickly identify and label wires even when the wire ends are located in different rooms. With use of the remote probe, the CT20 won't tie-up two people when identifying and labeling long distance wire/cable runs. The CT20 can tests wire lengths up to 10,000 feet in length (3,000 meters).

The CT20 drives a 20mA DC current pulse through the wires or cables under test to the bi-color remote probe, allowing technicians to identify each of the wires under test at the other end of the cable run and eliminates the possibility of false high impedance readings. The flashing remote probe features two lead, bi-color (red/green) LEDs, enabling you to identify up to three wires or cables at a time for correct labeling with only one trip to the other end location, cutting down on multiple trips back and forth.

The CT20 measures 3.6 x 2.4 x 1.14 inches (HxWxD), weighs 9.2 ounces, and is powered by a 9-volt battery. It's backed by a one-year limited warranty.

I am an electrician currently working in a commercial setting rehabbing old work originally done in the early 80s. Unfortunately, most of the circuits are unmarked at junction boxes and none of the individual wires are labeled except at their respective panels. I am dealing with 7 120/208V 42 breaker panels as well as 4 277/480V 24 breaker panels. Add to this the fact that circuits from different panels are sharing the same raceways. This little gadget has cut my troubleshooting time by at least a third. Without it, I'd be tying hots and neutrals together at the panel and ohming them out at the box. Instead, I'm able to just pull the wires loose from their lugs in the panel and ring them out with this little guy. It has also helped me catch a lot of unbalanced neutrals and other gremlins living in the system from previous renovations. I've also used it on control wiring to test correct polarity. While it may not be a necessity for a professional wireman, it sure beats twisting wires together and hitting them with a multimeter. I would highly recommend it to any homeowner or professional who doesn't mind ponying up the small price for it.

I was in a situation with up to 30 cables, about 80 feet long routed mainly in walls or through crawl spaces. All I saw was where the cables started and where they ended. They were not labeled or color coded and so my task was to figure out which cable was which using the visible cable ends. This continuity tester worked like a charm, period!

Great product! I purchased this to help with diagnosing problems with a bunch of 4-20mA control loops. Work like a charm and saved time with the bi color LED that helped determine polarity.

As stated in the title, a very handy little tool.
But...
my only gripe is that the pulse sent by this tester has a somewhat substanctial (spelling**) delay betwen hot and not. this is fine for working on wires that sit in a static enviornment, one that isnt subject to large amounds of vibration. In my work, when I ring out wires, i usually have some 1 else with me to "jiggle" the wire, wiring harnes etc, looking for intermitent loss of continuity. as such, this device as it is is not suitable to the job. I suspected that this tester might be powered by a 555 timer, and upon opening it and learning that it was, i intend to mod it, as a simple swap of capacitors will lead me to a significantly faster pulse(1uF for both should give me about 4000 beats per second). 4 stars becuase it really isa well thought out device, but not universally suitable

While installing a new bathroom vent/fan/heater I found I couldn't identify the wires between the attic and wall switch for the new vent/fan/heater as nothing was labeled on the old unit (8 wires). I purchased this CT20 for the sole purpose of ringing out the wiring. It worked GREAT -- attached the leads of the tester on the wires in the attic, went into the bathroom and used the small lead tester to identify the wires at the switch, marked them and proceeded to rewire the new vent. Since then I've used the tester for continuity checks and it works great. The tester appears to be well made - so it should last for many years to come.

This continuity tester is a great tool to have. The remote piece clips on to one end of your circuit, and you use the larger green box on the other end. Both sides beep and flash when continuity is detected. I used this to identify where a cable jack is terminated in my basement. It also comes with a small carrying bag, which is nice.

................... this is a very simple tool so it does not need an overblown 20 paragraph or extra complicated review so this one will be simple and to the point. first this tool is designed to do a very simple job its basic job is to check circuits for electrical continuity obviously. but it does have some other uses as well it can also be used to find both sides of an electrical circuit like for instance trying to chase the traveler or common wires on a two or three way switching circuit used on things like kitchen chandeliers or ceiling fans / track lighting and such. it can also be used to localize any circuit between your main panel and any single branch circuit leaving that panel. this tool can also be used for the telephone OR H.V.A.C. industry as well. these different scenarios can be tested as well as numerous others as long as you the user makes sure that the circuit being tested no matter what the working voltage of that circuit 120 volt 240 volt or 12 to 24 volt has been disconnected or powered down before testing or you will fry this tester as it is self powered by an internal 9 volt battery. the tool has a very user friendly setup with two lights on the top of the tester one shows that the tool is turned on with the green light and the red light shows the continuity test the slider switch in the center turns the tool on or off and the little L.E.D. indicator device that is attached to the side of the unit gets removed to attach to the opposite side any circuit being tested by the main tester box. the tester box sends power to the little indicator light allowing you the user to locate both matching sides of any circuit being tested.Read more ›
