5.0 out of 5 stars There's nothing average about Gin!, May 1, 2009
By
This review is from: Extended Play (MP3 Download)
I first heard of Gin Wigmore while traveling with my brother in New Zealand in August of 2008. We heard her song "Under My Skin" while driving along the coast in Dunedin, NZ and then heard it several other times throughout our trip. Once back in the States I searched for her album but it was not available anywhere online. I'm so glad it's finally available here in the US.

Gin has such an original and refreshing voice that it almost makes you overlook the lyrics. But getting lost in her voice and ignoring the lyrics would do Gin a disservice. I only hope that she records a full length album in the near future. She really shines in her more upbeat songs such as "S.O.S" and "Under My Skin". I highly recommend purchasing this album!

This first album of Gin's is fantastic!! The songs are so catchy. The songs have a bit of an old school vibe.
I also suggest getting her album "Holy Smoke" as well. Its just as fun to listen too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great singer, Great Value, July 23, 2010

I suggest grabbing the mp3 downloads from Amazon or from iTunes... that way you're getting 5 great songs for roughly the price of two.

"Under My Skin" is an immediately catchy tune; "S.O.S." is another upbeat, fun song.
"Easy Come, Easy Go" is slower as is "Hallelujah,"--a soulful tribute to her father. If she can write songs like Hallelujah at 16, as her website says, I'm definitely interested in what she's going to do in the future!

She's a like Duffy meets Jewel with some Janis Joplin/Carole King edge and a tiny bit of V.V. Brown thrown in for good measure. In other words; she's amazing.

I'm so happy I stumbled onto a free track from her, a track off her debut album `Holy Smoke' that really got me excited enough to purchase this EP and sink my teeth into what she has to offer. These five tracks are stellar and they really have me all sorts of hot and bothered for her album. In fact, I may be clicking on the `purchase' button in a few minutes.

I just wanted to get this off my chest first.

With gin soaked vocals (I don't think that name is a coincidence) and a confidence laced with the right amount of vulnerability, Gin Wigmore stands out like a sore thumb (in a good way) on everyone of these tracks.

The opening track, `These Roses', has a simplicity to it that embellishes Gin's standout vocals. She has a piercing voice that sifts over the piano keys like a sharp knife waiting to make its first cut. `Hallelujah' has a similar softness to it. It has an almost bluesy swagger to it, recalling to my mind the folksy greatness of Ray LaMontagne and the like. The closing, `Easy Come Easy Go', has a delicate playfulness about it that almost gives it a lullaby sound.

But, for me, the best tracks here are `S.O.S' and `Under My Skin', two fun loving, engaging and catchy tunes that show a playful side to Gin. These are the songs that recall the glorious V.V. Brown to me. `Under My Skin' is pure perfection, with great lyrics and great musicality. Everything just comes together wonderfully. I love the bouncy chorus, which is just so much fun to sing along with. It almost has a saloon-esque vibe to it.

So, check this girl out. She has what it takes to be different and remain consistent and memorable!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gin is great without the tonic!, August 14, 2009
This review is from: Extended Play (Audio CD)
The first time that I heard Gin, it was on a commercial for Air New Zealand. I heard the music in the background and soon after went to work on an online search for her. Once I found out who she was, I was right off to Amazon to buy her album! I really didn't know what to expect, but I listened to the sample music on here and without even finishing the rest, purchased it, and waited in anticipation for it to arrive in the mail. All I have to say is AMAZING! Every song, although there are only 5 on there, is great! Her voice reminds me of Macy Gray, her style is fun, bubbly on some songs, and she makes you feel what each song is about, like she is telling you a story of her life and you can feel the emotion behind it! I am waiting in anticipation for her new album which should be out very soon, if I am not mistaken.

Her voice is a cross between Macy Gray, Diana Krall, and Joanna Wang. Distinct, emotional, and full of fun, this EP is a great introduction to Kiwi Gin Wigmore. Song by song,

These Roses is a bitter sweet song about not being scared of love and trudging forward within it.

Expectinig another ABBA remake when I saw the title, S.O.S., I was was pleasantly surprised since it is not an ABBA remake. S.O.S. has an island feel to it; upon hearing it, I felt I was sitting on the beach with a double big gulp size margarita. Asking for help, it 'makes no sense to do it all again' and 'I'm sending out an S.O.S. times two'.

Hallelujah starts off with a nice slow guitar in the style of New Braunfels, Texas' Sixpence None The Richer. The song is surprisingly slow with her beautiful velvet voice. Hallelujah indeed!

Under My Skin is the song from the Air New Zealand Nothing To Hide commercial that has over 4 million hits on YouTube and it was this commercial mentioned on a CNN release to which I was able to find this song.

Easy Come Easy Go starts out reminding me of an acoustic version of Kansas "Dust In The Wind" slightly sped up. I love the ending to the song, 'Would You Wait, Would You Wait, Would You Wait For Me'. The answer is YES.

Here's hoping to hear more from her.

I heard her song on a Lowe's commercial and thought I have to hear the complete song. I went on Amazon and listened to her sing and I was hooked. She's got the kind of voice that is unforgettable. She sounds a bit like Duffy and Amy Winehouse combined. I bought two of her CD's through Amazon. Amazon is the place to buy CD's. You can get almost anything you're looking for through them. Get Gin Wigmore.....she's awesome!
