Hot Tuna - 'Steady As She Goes'

Biography

From their days playing together as teenagers to their current acoustic and electric blues, probably no one has more consistently led American music for the last 50 years than Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, the founders and continuing core members of the iconic blues-roots band Hot Tuna.

Now members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the pair began playing together while growing up in ... Read more in Amazon's Hot Tuna Store

In a perfect world Hot Tuna's "Double Dose" would be readily available on cd...in a really perfect world DD would already be remastered with bonus cuts...and in that perfect world we'd call this release a rip-off. BUT, the world isn't perfect and DD isn't readily available (yet) and so this has to be counted for what it is - the best single source for cuts from DD currently available.

This is all previously released material. 4 cuts are from the first Hot Tuna lp (Know You Rider, Uncle Sam Blues, Don't You Leave Me Here, and Death Don't Have No Mercy) and the other 6 cuts are from DD (Funky #7, Bowlegged Woman Knock Kneed Man, Genesis, Embryonic Journey, I Wish You Would, and Watch The North Wind Rise).

It's ALL good! But the only reason to buy this is for the otherwise mostly unavailable cuts from DD. Until DD comes out, this'll have to do!

This bargain bin item actually provides a pretty nice little overview of the band. Jorma Koukonen and Jack Casady began Hot Tuna as an offshoot of Jefferson Airplane with which to explore their love of authentic acoustic blues. When the Airplane became a Starship, Hot Tuna became a full-time concern and added some more conventional rock songs and selected Airplane pieces to their sets. As time went on and lineups changed, the band increasingly became a loud blues-rock outfit, sort of Foghat with virtuoso musicianship. All these aspects of Hot Tuna manage to be represented in these live versions from ca. 1972 and 1977.

The early acoustic blues period, with Will Scarlett on harp, features deft takes on blues standards like "Know You Rider" and "Death Don't Have No Mercy." Nice versions of "Genesis" and "Watch The North Wind Rise" represent the more conventional west-coast rock sound, while tracks like "Funky #7" and a killer take on "I Wish You Would" capture the hard-blues aspect.

Kaukonen was and is a guitarist of remarkable dexterity and adaptability, at home with everything from ragtime picking to hard rock shredding, and this low-cost quickie comp is a nice way to become aquainted with his talents and some of the band's best material.

Now I'm going to make what must be my 20th attempt to teach myself to play "Embryonic Journey."

Appears to be a compilation from first hot tuna album and Double Dose.

The double dose Embryonic journey sounds like it was recorded off a turntable with bad wow and flutter.

i have a confession to make, this is my first hot tuna cd purchase and i couldn't be happier. it combines two of h.t's releases, containing songs from both the self titled hot tuna album debut from '69 (acoustic set) and songs from an 'electric' midseventies set called 'double dose'. to me the music sounds like a mix of zappa, grateful dead, and stevie ray vaughn. so if you think you can dig an artist who's music is a mix of all three, get this. it's cheap here on amazon, so, what are you waiting for? buy this now!!!
