I am a Yardbirds fan from way back to the days of the original band. This is a wonderful CD and I love the reincarnation of the band. I just wish there were more tracks on the CD. Buy this, it is well worth it!

First off let me say that I would give this disc 4 stars for music but have to deduct a full star for the nonexistent liner notes mentioned in the other review. Jim McCarty on drums. Chris Dreja on Rhythym Guitar. Those are your two originals. Ben King on lead guitar. You can also hear Ben on the Live At BB Kings album. The relative newcomers here are Andy Mitchell on lead vocals, harmonica and acoustic guitar and Dave Smale on bass. Let's face it...this is a budget release and it is what it is. 10 songs for 10 bucks. Not bad at all. If you have seen The Yardbirds in the past three of four years this is the group you saw. The sound and the song selection is great with one exception. I would have liked to have had Train Kept A Rollin' on here but it wasn't to be. Here are the songs: Drinking Muddy Water, Heart Full Of Soul, Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor, Shapes Of Things, Crying Out For Love (from the 2003 album Birdland) Over Under Sideways Down, For Your Love, Happenings Ten Years Time Ago, Dazed and Confused, (Yes, The Yardbirds did it first) and a stand out version of Smokestack Lightning. Don't be put off that none of the more famous guitar players are on here as Ben King certainly holds his own and then some. If you like The Yardbirds you will be satisfied with this disc. It's just a shame that Sony didn't even put a minimum effort into credits and liner notes. Recorded 2010-2011. Springfield, Mass. Norfolk, Conn. Londonderry, New Hampshire and Foxboro, Mass. (This lineup is also on the 'Making Tracks' DVD available on Amazon.Yardbirds - Making Tracks

This great "live" cd was recorded during the Yardbirds 2010-2011 tour (I saw them in 2010). Ben King, their twenty-something lead guitarist is spectacular (Eric Clapton take note). This is the best the Yardbirds have sounded in years. The energy is still there and it comes through on this album. Like others have said in their reviews, there are too few songs and no liner notes. This is a no frills BUDGET cd. The record label could have supported this effort a little more. But... those ten tracks rock big time. If you're a Yardbirds fan then you'll enjoy this effort from the latest incarnation of this legendary band.

This concert CD is very good. I don't think it is technically as good as "Live At BB King's" but it is a much looser performance and really smokes. It could be just the acoustics of the room or the final mix's. Either way it works. I am very familiar with the room at BB King's in NYC and it has excellent acoustics. One thing I find interesting is the slight difference in overall tone between this CD and the "Making Tracks" CD with the same material. This CD seems a bit brighter and the mix sounds more "open" less boxy than "Making Tracks". There may have been different mastering engineers who just EQ'd differently for each release. "Extended Versions" lists Maria Triana as the mastering engineer plus another "Producer" Doug Wygal. These names don't appear on "Making Tracks". Anyway I like the slightly better sound on this CD though I think I being nit picky. One thing "Live at BB King's" has going for it is that it includes a really great version of "Mr. You're a Better Man Than I" which isn't on either "Making Tracks" or "Extended Versions" and a great version of Chris and Jim's "Box of Frogs" song "Back Where I Started". But the BB King's CD doesn't have "Think About It", "Tinker,Taylor" or "Smokestack Lightning".

Let's face it, you need all three CD's, Live at BB King's, Making Tracks and Extended Versions. Each one has something extra to offer and are well worth owning.

I have been listening to the Yardbirds since 1964 and they have never sounded better than with this lineup. Jim McCarty and Chris Dreja have done a great job in keeping this band together all these years. Ben King is the best guitarist the Yardbirds ever had. The lead singer is just fantastic, the best since Keith Relf left the band. The bassist is great, too. This concert is far better than the Live at B.B.King Club because of the lead singer and the bassist. My suggestion is that the bass can be a little firmer, such as Steve Harris's or Geezer Butler's style. This group was never as heavy as this recent concert, almost heavy metal. Just great. Please go to the studio and record or re-record at least 12-15 songs with this lineup, especially "Still I am Sad" and "You are a Better Man Than I." Jim is a very good songwriter. Keep this lineup and record more and more. My only wish is that this CD was a little longer. Up the Yardbirds.

I have seen this version of the Yardbirds and others...including the 1966 ones...and the sound of the band over the years in various versions has always amazed me. Gypie Mayo to young Mr. King...what a band. Do yourself a favor...get this and another recordings of the bands of the last 10 years known as THE YARDBIRDS...they will only ADD quality to your record/cd collection. Duke
