3.0 out of 5 stars Extermination, Or what I learned at the Polar Cap...
A very enjoyable, follow the nice Marine around and shoot ooze spitting worms, kinda game. I just love shoot'em ups, and more so those that feature the 'hero' moving around, not total first person, with only a gun showing in your hands. The graphics are very good, and the sound is fantastic, especially piped through your stereo system. Lots a shooty. My only beef with...

The rest of these reviews pretty much sum up the gaming experience of Extermination, i.e., if you enjoy Resident Evil you will most definitely get into this game. The storyline carries along nicely, the graphics and sound are good, the weapons and battles are cool and the overall atmosphere is creepy with a menacing ambience that sets a great tone. The only quibbles I have is the voice acting (think the first Resident Evil. Yes, it's THAT painful and EXTREMELY laughable. I mean, if a buddy of yours died, would you non-chalantly say, 'Damn'? Why is it so hard to get good voice acting in a video game??) and the camera angles. There are a few points in the game that are so blindingly annoying because of the awkward positions that it is nigh on impossible to point yourself in the right direction (when you climb into the crashed plane and attempt to leap off of some crates hanging in the air you'll know what I mean). With these few points aside, this is a game worthy of playing. Don't buy it, though, just rent it as it's only a good 5 hours long and the replay value doesn't add up to much (collect all 15 dogtags and you get to play through with more ammo, weapons and health, which doesn't mean much since the monsters take more damage the second time through!).

5.0 out of 5 stars Does Cindy know about Sonia??, June 21, 2007
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Extermination (Video Game)
Yep I gave this game 5 stars, because I absolutely loved playing it. The story is the same old virus/mutation saga, but nonetheless it is intriguing, well developed and the never gets in the way of the game. You are a USMC in an elite group sent to find out what's happened at a remote Antartic research station. From the get go there are problems as your plane inbound takes a hit and you find yourself divorced from the rest of the team.

Once you gain entry into the research station, the game begins to develop its rythymn...slow at first and then look out, a veritable monster feast for you or them depending on your reflexes.

One of the aspects of the story that I enjoyed the most was the interplay with the main character and a woman named Cindy, who appears early on in the game offering cryptic assistance as you discover what a world of hurt awaits in the research station. One of the other great things about this game (for me) is that there are no arcane puzzles to solve, just find the things you need and you are off and running. Save terminals, weapon ammo, and healing stations are well placed and allow you to keep going without endlessly repeating the same tired scripts.

I owned Cold Fear prior to playing this game and I have to say that I would much rather play Extermination than Cold Fear. Cold Fear is a great game, but lacks the depth of environments, monsters, and story line that Extermination contains.

From start to finish I found the game appealing, appropriately difficult, and easy enough to play without being too easy.

The only real gaffs in the story relate to Sonia's demise. You'll wonder about it too once you get there. And then there's the reporter, who's not a reporter, who emerges alive after being in a room with a bad monster. He appears twice and then not again, even though the info you collect suggests that he's a bad dude that needed to be taken down. He's still out there....

Great game, lasts longer than 5 hours for those of us with moderate game skills and is just plain fun. Plus...it's cheap...!!!

My only beef with the game, and this is true of alot of these types of games, is at times it is very difficult to control the dude, especially in tight spaces... The POV gets kinda loopy in tight spaces, with the environment graphics getting in the way and causing the 'hero' to act spastic. Also, this game does not offer the wide range of weapons of say a Metal Gear, as all of the weapon upgrades get 'kludged' onto the assault rifle.

The plot is thin, and the dialog is a bit stilted, but hey, this ain't supposed to be Hamlet...

A good shoot'em up. Maybe better to rent it a couple of times from Blockbuster than owning.

3.0 out of 5 stars Like 'The Thing', January 15, 2003
This review is from: Extermination (Video Game)
This game is pretty darn good, although I think it is very similar to 'The Thing' in more ways than one. It is set in the arctic, and the creatures are just like it, sloppy and slimey. I found it quite fun, although it can get excrutiatingly difficult and often I found myself out of ammo. pretty good, but only for desperate fans.

Mutant Marines, virus spitting takpoles and Aliens interior decor all serve to tingle gamers spines in eztermination, but the real terror literally lies right under one's nose.Demon controls! These heinous torture tools will enrage Gahndi patient gamers.Try shooting down multi attacking bloodsuckers in third person with the behind the back camera view.Get used to getting mauled while being forced to stand still th shoot, and expect to kill mucho gaming sessions not infectoids with a completely ineffect oik auto aim.Still, the controls are atleast good for one thing:running something you will be doing a lot of to survive.TREADMILL SIMULATOR ANYONE?

3.0 out of 5 stars Great, but not that great, August 9, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Extermination (Video Game)
When I first started playing the game, I thought it was terrible. The annoying camera angles, the voice dubbings, the average graphics. I was wondering while I was playing this whether I should take it back to the store or not because it was so boring. All you do is kill these little tiny aliens, and that gets old fast. I had to force myself to like this game. And, I realized as I went through the game, it became more interesting and exciting. The story got better, and the action got better. When playing this for the first time: just stick it out, it will get better. This is the kind of game when you beat it, you never want to play it again. I wish that I would have rented it because it wasn't worth the ... bucks for me. It's no Resident Evil, that's for sure.

= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Extermination (Video Game)
This game is decent, especially considering it was not really a mainstream PS2 game. The controls are not the greatest, especially some of the camera angles. With that being said, however, the gameplay was nice and the storyline not too shabby either. This game grew on me. When I first started playing it, my interest was rather low, but over time I grew to enjoy it. The monsters were pretty smart, and the environments pretty creepy. Too bad this wasnt created for the PC, as I now do not play console games anymore.

Overall = Good

I love survival horror games, I played and beat all 4 Resident Evils, which includes the Dreamcast's Veronica, and Silent Hill, this game didn't actually remind me of these games however. The plot is interesting and the story moves along pretty steadily, but a couple hours into it, you already know who the girl in the chemical suit is. The action is fun, kind of Resident Evilish, and the atmosphere is kind of creepy. Walking through total blackness, you have to stop moving to turn on your gun-mounted light, and BOOM, you notice that you are completely surrounded! Little surprises like that, but nothing really cool like in RE with something blasting through a window right behind you.

My only real problem is the dubbing, during cinematics, the characters' mouths are still moving after they are done talking, and the subtitles are always 4 sentences behind, but you don't have to have the subtitles. All in all, a very fun game that will draw you and will [take] a couple hours of the day from you without you even noticing. Trust me though, killing little mutant things isn't as scary as blasting zombies, and an Antarctic base isn't as creepy as a deserted police station. RE 2 is better!

1.0 out of 5 stars Camera Angles + Controls = Stupid, September 18, 2001
By
This review is from: Extermination (Video Game)
If you like suicide, this is your game.

The camera angles combined with horrible controls lead to this game becoming work.

The character can do incredible things when the action button is pressed at the right instant... or he can take a swan dive off a ledge into death because of a bad camera angle or lacking hair-pin timing.

Resident Evil overcomes this by giving characters a basic ability to recognize a death maneuver or having auto-aim actually mean auto-aim.

This game is a laborious bore and is now promptly for sale.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extermination, not Resident Evil, April 2, 2002

I just played Extermination and RE3: Nemesis, I think that they are the same genre but not comparable games. Extermination may have you killing a lot of bugs at first, but about an hour in; the game gets better. At first, I'd rate it with a four. However, playing on, I thought that the second portion of the game made up for the first part. Just before wasting bugs gets seriously annoying and routine, more kinds of enemies appear. Weapons were customizable, so there were different situations that different weapons would solve the problem. Extermination really needs a good sequel by the same group, they know what it takes to make a great game.
