Book Description

May 13, 2008
Follow the dysfunctional, disturbing adventures of exterminator Henry James and his freakish cohorts as they take on the cruel chaos of nature in the dirtiest corners of Los Angeles. This is the smart and scary tale of roaches, rats, raccoons and the men who kill them. In this volume, illustrated by Darick Robertson, the artist of TRANSMETROPLITAN, the Bug Bee Gone gang faces a catastrophic threat: an invasion of the giant, killer cockroach known as the Mayan Hisser. Only they can stand between the bugs and the collapse of urban civilization.

1.0 out of 5 stars What Happened???, January 15, 2009
This review is from: Exterminators, The Volume 4: Crossfire and Collateral (Paperback)
After thoroughly enjoying the creativity, grossness, and great artwork in volumes 1-3 of the Exterminators series, I was completely disappointed with volume 4. Where do I begin? The artwork was not of the quality or consistency that one would expect from this series. Simon Oliver's writing became downright lazy, relying on recycled 80's and 90's action blockbuster movie cliches, especially in the anticlimactic "action packed finale." Oliver and Ty Templeton seem extremely out of touch when portraying people of "other" ethnicities. They don't do well by women either. Templeton draws a 15 year old character who looks like a 28 year old supermodel. Oliver drops the ball with characters Page and Laura. There is very little, if any, insight into their characters. Their role in the story never goes far beyond them being Henry's current and ex-girlfriend-gone-bad.

Characters previously introduced into the series are forgotten or merely glanced over like Stefan, Nil's estranged son, who's mysterious criminal background is never explained. Saloth's romance, dark past, and potential legal trouble with Detective Hunter all seem to have completely disappeared.

To me, the insects were the most effective characters in the story. Their scheming and methods of devouring human prey were truly terrifying.

I would highly recommend that anyone who liked the first 3 volumes borrow this book from the library before you buy it. Otherwise you could have a rude awakening and wonder where your $15 went.

Remender is the guy behind the current "Venom" comic book. This isn't the best volume in the series, but I loved this thing from start to finish.
You definitely want to start with volume 1 though.
