This must be emphasized because, these days, we tend to assume that what we used to call the 'CD drive' would allow us to watch movies on our computers. It is not the case with this device which is solely a CD-ROM drive. It will play music off your CDs and it will read any files stored on CDs but it will NOT recognize the DVD format.

As a CD drive, it performed flawlessly when connected through the USB port on my Vista machine.

You will find the following in the box:

- the CD drive itself
- USB cable to connect to computer
- cable to connect to external power supply (not needed and external power supply is not provided)
- mini CD disk with drivers (not needed in my case)
- 3-paragraph 'manual'

Worth mentioning:

- drive is very slim - 1/4"
- on my Vista laptop installation was automatic and the drive was recognized immediately
- a USB 2.0 port appears to provide all the power the drive may need

Within the context of this being a CD drive I am going to subtract one star for the 'for ASUS EEE PC' claim. This will work on an ASUS machine but it will work on ANY computer running XP or Vista so calling it 'for ASUS' is only marketing hype that may blind potential customer into assuming (see above) that they are getting a DVD drive with the purchase.

Easy to setup, lightweight, small in size but performs well. I recommend this item to anyone that recently purchased a netbook and needs to load a few sotware items on to the netbook. Get this item as it does exactly what it was designed to do.

I just got this external CD drive and find it to be perfect for installing my anti-virus software on to my little netbook. What a great buy! The seller got it to me fast too. I have no complaints.

Bought this for my son's ASUS eee PC. The PC did not recognize the drive and wouldn't read it. After futzing around for a couple hours installing drivers, testing the drive on another machine, testing the usb ports on the PC, etc. I gave up and decided to ship it back for a refund. It's supposed to be Plug n Play, but judging by other reviews, it does not work as intended on every PC. If its works, its a great cheap little drive, but if it doesn't work life's too short to screw with it.

I bought this to install software on my Asus netbook. Opened the box, plugged it in, and simply use it without any problem what so ever. For the price from Amazon, nothing to consider. If you have a netbook get this drive.

Ordered on a Sunday morning and arrived on Tuesday with standard shipping.

Pros: Does what it is supposed to do, I immediately loaded a couple of photo programs on my Asus notebook and also Civilization III, Conquests.

Cons: If you are a Cal resident they charge tax. No big deal.

***** 6 MONTH UPDATE ***** Playing Civ III on my ASUS Netbook almost every day since my purchase and this CdRom drive has performed flawlessly. That means the drive is in constant use and no problems.

***** 8 MONTH UPDATE ****** Just aquired two Acer Aod 250 Netbooks and loaded AVG Internet Security for 3 User/Windows 7 compatible on both of them with this Cd Rom with no problems and also loaded Avg on my Asus Netbook. One Acer has Windows 7 Starter and the other XP however neither would play Civ III after loading. Not the fault of the CD Rom. Also loaded with no problems my MP490 Canon printer software on the Asus XP Netbook and the Acer XP Netbook with this CD Rom. The only CD this CD ROM has failed to recognize and load so far is Shogun; a nine year old program that started off the Total War series.

i needed to intall a program on a small acer netbook. i tried linking two computers (PIA)!! This was cost effective and did not need a driver.. plug and play. It feels cheep, but works well. Check out the local stores and you will be glad to buy this one. Don't know if it plays dvds but looking at the other review i think it does, just not Blues.

Ordered this item for a just purchased netbook, as there was no CD drive. I wanted to load Microsoft Works suite program discs that came with my original desktop as there was no word processing program pre-loaded on the netbook. Also, we'll be taking the netbook on an overseas trip and I wanted to load some CDs so we had some music to listen to.

Was surprised when I opened the box that the unit did not have the swivel feature for loading the disc in the drive as illustrated, and instead was like an automobile CD player, where the disc is just inserted. Also, paperwork with it indicated the "eject" button was just for show and did not work. To eject I would need to right click on the computer's CD drive. So, with the comments about trapped discs and discs just spinning around with no functionality I didn't know what to expect.

Bottom line, everything worked SUPER. I've already ripped a couple of dozen music CDs and loading the Works disc was a snap. For $13 or so this is a marvel!

I had one program on CD that I wanted to use on my new Acer Netbook, running Windows 7 and which does not have an optical drive. The software is an older version and I could not access a downloadable version. The only download option was to buy the newest version at $79+. I hesitated on buying this inexpensive drive, as none of the reviews I found mentioned using it on Windows 7, but I decided to take the chance. I'm happy I took the risk. The item arrived quickly and was easy to install. My Acer had no problem reading and installing the drivers from the included disc. I was able to install my software with no problem. This external drive was a very inexpensive solution to my problem and now I have access to a CD drive should I need it again. Much less expensive than buying a download of the newest version of my software, especially one I am happy and familiar with.

I needed a CD-Rom drive to install windows on my HP Mini 110-1125NR and didnt want to spend much money for the external drive. I considered many times just purchasing an enclosure and using a CD-Rom drive from an old laptop I have. But an enclosure would have been about the same price as THIS CD ROM Drive.

Like others have said THIS IS NOT A DVD DRIVE NOR A CD-R/CD-RW/DVD-R OR DVD-RW just a regular old CD ROM DRIVE. It does what its supposed to and nothing else. Very simple and easy to plug in. Comes with two USB Cords. One is for power and one for data. I was ecstatic that my HP Netbook was able to recognize it from the BIOS which is exactly what I needed to boot into the Windows setup.

Another great thing about this is that its SOOO SMALL! it fits perfectly in any backpack or any small shoulder bag designed for the netbooks. I LOVE IT!
