This is an answer to prayer for me. I have had this now for several weeks and bought it for my mini netbook. I do not have a cd/dvd drive on my small computer so I went on a hunt for one. I decided on this product, due to the reviews I read. I am not computer literate but did not have to be to make this work and work it does. My daughter has used this to rip and burn her cd's and I use it to watch all my DVD's in the comfort of my easy chair. This is REALLY great. I would tell everyone who was in need of this kind of item, GET IT!

i bought this to replace another external drive that was only a dvr (i needed a cd/cdrw/dvd). i opened my very carefully wrapped and packaged drive and was pleased to see that it stated cd/cdrw/dvd right on the front of it! i was unsure of the 2 cords as well, but i plugged them both into my dell netbook, and it worked right away. the only thing i don't like is that when you eject, you have to kind of pull the tray out. it also seems just a tad sensitive if you touch it while it's working. other than that, a great deal and good product!

item arrived quickly in an express mail envelope, however, no paperwork, receipts etc for the shipment and no directions/instructions for the unit. simple to figure out install but would not play a dvd. sometime spent on the internet revealed if you have a netbook with windows 7 starter edition you must download a media player before such a unit will operate. free software such as vlc media center obtained and the unit works fine.

Not only does it work great, it arrived early and I was given a free upgrade! I'm checking them first for any future purchases.

This works great with my Asus Eee PC 1001P-MU17-BU 10.1-Inch Intel Atom Netbook Computer (Royal Blue). Thanks to S. Moats for this important tip: If you are getting this for a netbook with WINDOWS 7 STARTER PLEASE BE AWARE THAT in order to play DVD's you will need to download VLC MEDIA PLAYER.

A few weeks ago my CD/DVD drive just stopped working on my hp laptop. This was really unfortunate since I love listening to music and am a huge gamer. When I went online to look for a replacement drive I discovered that internal drives are pretty expensive, at least when your short on cash like me. Then I went to Amazon and discovered this little external drive that looked good and was still in my price range. I bought it and hopped for the best. Now that I have received it I have to say that as of this moment I am very pleased with it. Some people on here said that the quality and construction aren't that great but I have to disagree. The drive and case seem very durable and it was incredibly easy to install, just plug it in and it starts working. I have tried all kinds of CD's in it and all of them work well, although one of my games made it run rather loudly. I'd have to say that the only con to this drive is the two 2.0 USP cords, if you are running it on a laptop like I am it kinda gets in the way. When I was looking in to buying this I was a little worried because nobody on the internet said anything about external drives playing computer games, but now I know they can. If you are looking in to buying a external drive for this purpose don't worry about it not playing games because this little drive did really well, it's just like a internal drive except it's not in the computer. I have to say I am impressed by the quality of the drive since the price was so low, I am also really happy with how fast it shipped. I live in MI and it arrived here all the way from CA in only two days. I haven't tried any DVDs yet so I can't say anything about that, but if I have a problem with the drive I'll by sure to update for future buyers. To sum it up I would like to say thank you to Power Optical and Amazon for a terrific experience and I hope to buy again in the near future!

I own a small Asus Netbook and decided I needed an external DVD drive. This one works just fine. So far I've imported a few CDs to iTunes and watched a couple of DVDs. No problems that I can identify.

I purchased this product for my netbook. I received it, it looked acceptable for a plain black mini external drive. Mine had two plugs needed to plug into the netbook, one for power and the other for performance. I plugged both in and the drive came up on "My Computer" but all the drive would do is click, click, click, and flash orange. While it was flashing orange and clicking, I couldn't even open the door to the drive to take out the disk. I had to use the eject option under my computer to get the thing to open. I turned the video disk over thinking maybe I had inserted the disk incorrectly and it did the same thing. I tried everything I could think of to ensure I was doing everything right to make it work, but it never did. It was very frustrating as I was needing it to go on a trip. I returned the item and got a refund, and that not being handled very well until I finally emailed the seller and told him I was going to leave him such negative feedback - that is when he contacted me about the problem. I ended up finding a wonderful mini external usb drive, made my Polaroid, clamshell in design with glossy black piano finish, very small and quite sturdier than this one. Anyway, the Polaroid drive worked terrific and made me happy. I purchased this mini Polaroid external drive at [...]. They have excellent products, support, and deals all the time. I use Amazon all the time for purchasing things and this product was the very first one that turned out to be a lemon. Maybe I was just an unlucky one to get one the didn't work right but there you have it, my experience with this product.

I purchased this player for my 9 year old daughters Acer Aspire One Netbook D255E for her to play DVDs, games and to load Norton 360 on the netbook. Item arrived quickly in a box combined with other items from Amazon, simply wrapped in one layer of bubble wrap and put in the box. There were no receipts etc for the shipment, and only a small booklet for installation on older Windows OS systems. The booklet DID mention that the unit is a CD/DVD burner, but required additional software to do so (I checked on my Acer 5532 laptop after plugging it in and running a diagnostic check, it is only a DVD/CD player). It also came with a USB driver disc which was unnecessary for my installation, and two USB plugs, one for media and one for power. Simple to figure out though, just plug in both USB plugs and Windows 7 Starter did the rest. However, like others with Windows 7 Starter, I had to download VLC Media Player to play DVD's. No problem there, except for the additional junk that came with the Media player download which I immediately deleted. The CD/DVD player works great now, and sounds especially awesome on earbuds. I have a Windows anytime upgrade from Starter to full home version ready to install, but I may return it now that I have this DVD/CD Rom working and the free desktop download correction fixed.

Cons: I was let down that so many others purchased the same unit and received a free upgrade to a DVD/CD burner. That is not a real major setback since this is for a 9 yr olds netbook, but it would have been nice to have as a back up to our other burner. One for all and all for one I say!

Pros: Easy, I mean EASY setup. Also found it nice that you do not need to utilize both USB cables, just plug in the media plug to the USB 2 and that is all required. Great price considering the seller guaranteed it would work with my Acer One Netbook model. Free shipping!!!! Case seems to be sturdy enough, (just don't pick it up and turn it side to side while it is playing). Region settings available, so it plays most everything. GREAT DVD picture on both my Acer laptop and the Acer Aspire one netbook, very pleased!

Overall, I would recommend this to anyone needing a DVD/CD rom for the Acer Aspire One Netbook, provided you do not want a unit for burning CD's and DVD's..

UPDATE 01 March 2011: The more I use this player the more I like it. The picture on my daughters Acer Aspire one Netbook is sharper than the one on my Acer Laptop with widescreen HD. If you are an Acer Netbook lover, this is the external player for you. Just a reminder, it is not a DVD/CD burner.

Final Update 04-14-2011: I finally upgraded my daughters Acer One Netbook from Windows starter to Windows 7 and the new OS picked up this player with no external help required for drivers etc. I also upgraded to 2GB memory, (see my other reviews), which took all of about 4 minutes to accomplish! My daughter is playing video games and watching DVD movies off this little player like there is no tomorrow!! I am amazed that this player has performed as it has. Total thumbs up for quality and performance!!! I upgraded to 5 stars, simply based on the overall performance and lifespan thus far. For the price you simply CANNOT go wrong!!!
