Great advice on learning to live a Christian life while being part of the world. Useful. Really liked it and will recommend it.

You have to read this book two times. The first for the 'Aha' moments. The second time for the 'Amen' moments. Using his stories, Argyl makes you reconsider where your heart is and where it should be. The lessons may be hard to receive but they will be worth the pain.

People entranced by the image they see in the mirror, and all of us who think about ourselves too often, need to ponder the truth within the pages of "The Externally Focused Life." Co-authors Rick Rusaw and Eric Swanson call us to focus and live on the outward as an alternative to the mere inward. We must discover a deep passion for God and the people He has placed in our lives.

Colossians 3:2 "Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things."

Chapters discuss:

- Loving God
- Your Story Matters: The authors quote Geoff Gorsuch: "The question to ask at the end of one's life's race is not so much `What have I accomplished?' but' Whom have I loved, and how courageously?'"
- Open Your Eyes
- Grace
- Eternity in Our Hearts
- Love your neighbor.

We must always remember what Jesus taught regarding the "The Greatest Commandment": Mark 12:28-31 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?" 29 "The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' 31The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself. 'There is no commandment greater than these."

We should aim to live for God. The non-faith-based worldview is not the answer. It not only commits philosophical self-destruction, it brings despair that grows in its claimants. The unbeliever Byron screams in horror on his death bed as he hollers in delusion that his bedspread is on fire.

I felt the book lacked direction and is filled with lots of tangentially related stories and platitudes. There wasn't anything wrong perse but I think there are other books out there getting the same point across in a more compelling and rigorously thoughtful way.

It is a good book but it jumps around quite a bit. It doesn't have great flow but the topics are great topics to cover. Some of the questions are weird but maybe that's to get you thinking outside of the norm.
