5.0 out of 5 stars SOUL!!
Yikes! This IS modern rock'n'roll baby! All sexed up, dressed up and messed up!! Extra Width whips it on ya with solid soul-punk power that should get yo' sorry butt motivatin' on the dance floor and home in bed. Mr Spencer and the boys don't give a darn what people in the lame, traditional, conservative "blues" scene think of them, they just wail on it. This album still...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but my least favorite
I am a big JSBX fan, and I still think this is a good album, but I personally find it there least enjoyable. This is mainly due to the fact that Jon's vocals are gargled and mixed to the back. This is a shame because Jon's voice is so good, the distorted vocals make it kind of hard to hear his hummor, and that is in my opinion, the best part of there sound. Tracks 1-5...

Mr Spencer and the boys don't give a darn what people in the lame, traditional, conservative "blues" scene think of them, they just wail on it. This album still stands up as THE blues/punk masterpiece. The Jon Spencer Blue Explosion wrote the book ( well, almost ) on minimalist blues sludge and pushed the envelope of the genre while Jack and Meg were still tryin' to coordinate their wardrobe!

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 years and still the champ, June 1, 1998

Spencer and Co. put the serious WHOMP! on your a** with this, their second and still finest recorded moment. From the double dipped bounce of the opening strains of "Afro" straight through to the libidinous "World of Sex," get your hankies at the ready- cuz you are most definitely going to sweat. More potent than viagra, louder than a sack of wet, mean cats, and twice as onry. This is the razorblade funk that you know you need more of in your life. When Jon and Judah trade off shouted choruses of "DAMMMNNNN!!!" you'll know exactly what they're hollerin' about- and you too, will have seen the light.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great JSBX disc., January 17, 2005
This review is from: Extra Width (Audio CD)
This is early, raw JSBX here. The sound is very upfront and intense.

Suprsingly, a large number of the songs are just instrumentals, mainly just vamps. But Russell is deep in a groove, and Jon lets it rip too.

Things aren't quite as focused as on later JSBX records, in fact most of the songs have little direction. But that's what makes this one so great. You cut out the middle and great straight to the rock.

Because the blues are number one. But he don't play no blues. He plays. Rock and Roll.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hear the Blues Exploded Like Never Before, April 1, 2002

take these rocking boots through the swamps of the bayou, across dusty miles of American hiway, and scrap them on a New York City sidewalk. somewhere in the stratosphere, there truly is an explosion of blues, hip hop, punk rock, and don't give a fig about anybody but yrself noise. Jon Spencer has always been a master of self-promotion, and with the Blues Explosion, he has a a reason. While not one of their best albums, certainly is a rocker deserving listen. If you have second hand speakers throughout yr house, this is a fantastic party album for you. take a whiff of my pantleg baby!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you!, September 4, 2000
This review is from: Extra Width (Audio CD)
The album that forever changed the face and sound of rock n' roll! An instant classic. How could one band rock so hard? What sort of power where they channeling when they recorded this aural masterpiece? I don't rock that much any more, but when I do - "Ectra Width" always satiates that need to rock. One of the best CDs of the 1990's. DAMN!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Yowl of Victory, May 19, 1998
By A Customer

Jon Spencer's yelling rivals Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and the tight musicianship of the Blues Explosion is a marvelous contrast. "Afro" and "Soul Typecast" send us shaking and breaking like a church revival, and the rest of the album is no less inspirational.

3.0 out of 5 stars I got the flavor., April 29, 1999
By A Customer

I love The Blues Explosion. However don't get me wrong, I love this CD its just there are a few songs that drag. For me the songs that don't drag make up for those that do, but you still have to wade throught them. I would say that the people that would listen to this Cd are more into punk rock than blues or rock. If you buy this CD I don't think you'll regret buying it ,but you may want to check out the other Blues Explosion CD's first.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Beautiful Noise from the Best Punk Band Ever!!, June 10, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Extra Width (Audio CD)
This album is simply the best of JSBX's releases. It captures a 'live' feel to it, chuck full of distortion and vacuum lust appeal. If you don't have a stomach for loud beautiful noise don't buy this album. It will blow your ass away!! I compare it to being hit in the face with Kurt Cobain's guitar while listening to Elvis. Buy IT!!!
