About the Author

No name in quilting is more associated with Log Cabin quilts than Judy Martin. Extraordinary Log Cabin Quilts is her third book on the subject, and first since the 2007 blockbuster, Judy Martin's Log Cabin Quilt Book. Since 1980, when Log Cabin Quilts came out, Judy has designed and published 75 new and original Log Cabin variations, including such popular patterns as Snake River Log Cabin and Colorado Log Cabin. Her knowledge of and affection for the pattern is well established. Judy Martin has been making quilts since 1969 and writing about them since 1979. She was an editor at Quilter's Newsletter Magazine and Quiltmaker from 1979-1987. Extraordinary Log Cabin Quilts is her 22nd book on quilting.

Owning all of Judy Martin's quilting books, I am pretty impressed with her quilting designs and instructions. When I knew this newest quilting book was becoming available, I knew I wanted to share it with other readers. For quilters of all skill levels, Extraordinary Log Cabin Quilts has 15 quilts, and color throughout. Twelve of the quilt patterns are made with rectangles and three quilts add half-square triangles. Whether you have a King-sized bed or Queen-sized, Judy Martin's quilt patterns have both, and a wall hanging size.

I have been a huge fan of Judy Martin's books for many years. She has an amazing eye when it comes to design and color, and this book is a wonderfully deeper look into her talents. Unlike her other books which are notable for her straightforward construction techniques, this book is full of her most complicated quilts…definitely not for the novice quilter or the faint of heart. This book contains deep explorations of classic designs, none of which seem easy - these are truly heirloom quilts. They are lovely to look at and admire and I am excited that Judy Martin decided to do it because the quilts are absolutely gorgeous.

As Ms. Martin states in her book, some folks tend to shy away from this pattern, the Log Cabin. I feel as though she has written this book directed at me! I have wanted to do one of these for the longest time, but thought it was too time consuming to do correctly, to do it justice. This book seems to be a fun read. She speaks plain-people english; OMG, never mind the absolutely MIND BLOWING, GORGEOUS quilts in the book!! I had no idea there could be so many arrangements from this one block.

I just got this book today and as soon as I opened it, I was overwhelmed by the color photos and all the different designs and the feeling of "I want to do that one!" and "that one!" and "oooh!" and "I didn't know that was even possible!" There is about 95 pages of this! Oh, and there's Not just one Sample of design in each 'chapter' .......

She has done her level best to give as much (high detail) instruction as possible. Ms. Martin states right away that her quilts are complex and time consuming. These quilts are NOT for the faint of heart. Granted, anyone can do them. If you can read and work a rotary cutter and a sewing machine, you can make any quilt. For these, you should not be afraid to be organized and should have some "stick-to-it-tiveness" in you. And you must love Log Cabins!

Oh, and she has this adorable pattern rating system. One rotary cutter means the pattern does not require much in the way of cutting; it's basically squares and rectangles. Three light bulbs means there's a lot going on and you really need to pay attention! LOOOVE THIS! LIke I said, she speaks plain-people english :) Can't wait to get started on one ! Glad I found this book.

I have purchased several of Judy's previous books. It is amazing how she comes up with fresh and creative ways to twist and turn this old favorite. Her books are bursting with content: layout alternatives, cutting charts, multiple size instructions, beautiful photographs of actual examples. This is real value for your money.

Excellent instructions and diagrams. I prefer step by step and the way in which the book is written allows one to follow closely and accurately to the expectations of the pattern you are working on. There are beautiful ones and I hope to make two or three over the years in front of me!

Another great addition to a quilter's library. Log cabin quilts are alway going to be in style and are especially great for using up the fabric left over from other quilts. This book gives lots of new log cabin patterns to add variety to those you make. Photos and diagrams are great. Any quilter would enjoy this book.
