This interview with Noam Chomsky by Howard Gardner, who is also the writer of the multiple intelligences used in education today, conducts the interview with sincere interest in Chomsky's work and private life first they go through Chomsky's early life, career move in linguistics which they discuss for a great deal and then they speak about his life as a child and then consumerism and his interpretation of current politics and finally art.
It is good to see that there still are people who challenge the question "question everything" rather than asking for a paycheck only because they have studied at the right schools. definitely interesting to watch

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful By Daniel A Goldman on February 1, 2014
Format: DVD
This review is for Extraordinary Minds: Noam Chomky

Format: This is a live interview, about 50 minutes long, before an audience of students. The show is well produced, with a simple format showing the interview on a stage. The students don't ask any questions. It's all a conversation.

Gardner and Chomsky: The interviewer, Howard Gardner, is a professor and author. Noam Chomsky is a famous and influential professor, linguist and public figure. Both are easy to understand, friendly, and thoughtful.

Chomsky develops his ideas: Chomsky describes a boat trip in Europe in his student days, when he started thinking about some of his important ideas. The conversation at this point is somewhat technical, perhaps hard for most (including me) to really understand, with references to "structural linguistics", "generative grammars", and some other technical terms. It's obvious two geniuses are talking here, with some (cordial) disagreements, but kind of hard to sometimes understand the details. The conversation seems rather theoretical, is lacking in good examples.

Behaviorism: There is discussion (and some disagreement) about "behaviorism", as researched by BF Skinner. Chomsky does not agree with behaviorism. It is not clearly defined exactly what behaviorism is, as this is a conversation, not a lecture.

Origin and evolution of language: Chomsky discusses some about the origin of language perhaps 75,000 years ago. Also, there is discussion of the paradox that languages seem very different, but children seem to learn them the same way.

Childhood: Chomsky is better at telling stories when the conversation moves to the Chomsky childhood. Chomsky wrote an article in 1939 (age 10) for his school newspaper about the fall of Barcelona!
