Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 6-12. In this collective biography, familiar names like Sonja Henie and Martina Navratilova appear alongside their less familiar but influential colleagues, such as African American tennis great Ora Washington and Olympic vice-president Anita DeFrantz. The strictly formatted sketches of 45 women have competition as their main focus, with information on childhood, family, and education to round out the picture. A few profiles, unfortunately, are little more than summaries of tournaments and world records. Sprinkled in between the biographies are chapters on athletes in ancient times, the women's baseball league, the WNBA, and female sportscasters. The selection of subjects is overwhelmingly American, though an appendix of nearly 70 more world-class athletes is an attempt to add geographic balance. The writing may not be inspired, but the consistent format of these four- to seven-page biographies plus the wide selection of names and sports makes this a solid place to start a research paper. The volume includes lists of organizations, Web sites, and titles for further reading. Randy Meyer

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Look at the History of Women in Sports, July 22, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Extraordinary Women Athletes (Extraordinary People) (Library Binding)
Extraordinary Women Athletes is an extraordinary book. It is well-written and exhaustively researched, filled with inspiring stories of athletes from ancient to modern times who have surmounted social, physical, and political obstacles in their quest to perform. Although written for children, this book is a great read for adults as well. I recommend it highly!
