Book Description

November 1, 2004
Extreme Golf is a captivating journey through the world’s most geographically extreme, climatically challenging, dangerous and uniquely designed courses.

From the sweltering courses of the desert to the freezing ice golf championships in Greenland, and from the erotically shaped bunkers in lush surroundings in France to the harsh surfaces in Kabul, golf is clearly no longer the elite sport it once was. Today’s golfers (at least the ones not wearing plaid pants) are looking for the extreme-where the rough is patrolled by wild animals and the greens are sometimes white.

This lushly illustrated book features more than 200 breathtaking and often hilarious photographs capturing the true spirit of extreme golf, accompanied by light-hearted and engaging text. Including an appendix listing the unusual courses around the world (in case you’d like to make a tee time), Extreme Golf’s chapters include:

• Location, Location, Location (out of the way places in the world)
• Courses for Concern (difficult due to geographic oddities)
• Golf by Design (in which the course designer influences the extreme setup)
• In the Rough (really hard courses in really strange places)

Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

World ice championship Uummannaq, Greenland
At the World Ice Golf Championship, the greens-more accurately “whites”-are formed from meter-thick ice. This nine-hole course is constructed fresh every year as the Uummannaq fjord freezes. Competitors are allowed to sweep the snow off their line with a broom. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

The world’s most bizarre and difficult golf
EXTREME
From the sweltering courses of the desert to the freezing World Ice Golf Championship in Greenland, from lava bunkers in Hawaii to the sand and oil surface in Dubai, today’s golfers are looking for the extreme-where the rough is patrolled by wild animals and the greens are sometimes white. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars And you already thought golfers were nuts, November 2, 2004
This review is from: Extreme Golf (Hardcover)
You just have to face it, there are some golf courses you're never going to play. Alan Shepard's "course" on the moon probably isn't going to be open for regular play for several years. And the pictures of the Kabul Golf and Country Club, complete with the caddy carrying a Soviet RPK-74 machine gun and a map of the minefields may be for you, but I think I'll pass. But the floating green on the Coeur d'Alene Resort (Idaho, and a truly beautiful place) that they move around every night looks great. Furnace Creek (Death Valley, California) looks like it might be a good place to play in mid-winter. 200 degree plus ground temperature in the summer is a little warm for me. And of course the Lucifer's Anvil course (Black Rock Desert, Nevada) is between the two so why not stop there.

This book describes thirty of the more unusual golf courses you're likely to find. What a Christmas present for the golfer who has everything....

This review is from: Extreme Golf (Hardcover)
Bought this for my dad for Christmas. He loved it. Read the whole book and has picked out a couple of courses he plans to visit. I would definately recommend this to anyone who loves golf. Even if you don't, the pictures are fantastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gift for Dad, October 21, 2006
This review is from: Extreme Golf (Hardcover)
I don't get the review below, if you hate golf, why would you write a review on a golf book? My dad loves to golf and I understand that he probably won't be able to go to all the golf courses in this book; however, I know he'll enjoy reading and seeing the pictures of some of these extreme courses. I'm definitely going to buy this book for him.
