I have been lifting over 30 years, and read at least 20 books on the subject.
This book is incredibly informative, it doesn't waste time with a bunch of information like how to do a bench press or how to do a crunch, but it gives terrific insights into how to structure a work-out, when to work out, nutrition, supplements, and other enhancements. Written by an M. D. who is also a dedicated bodybuilder, I highly recommend this book as a useful addition to any bodybuilder's library.

Useful advice on every page!,

You know how I know this book is worth its weight in gold? Because I finally got my calves to grow. Really, it's that simple! I've been training hardcore for seven years, and I pretty much wrote my calves off. Every bodybuilder has a weakness and those calves were mine. But this guy Colker, he's been doing this for 20 years, he's the guy the pros go to, and he knows about weaknesses. And he knows what works.
I picked up this book because I saw this guy Carlon Colker on TV and everything he said made a lot of sense. When you have a medical degree (this guy, unlike most bodybuilding book authors, is an actual doctor) and spend 20 years in gyms, helping pros and aspiring pros get to the next level, you're going to accumulate a lot of wisdom. That's the best thing about this book. Colker tells you what to do, what to expect when you do it right, and what will happen if you do it wrong. And he does this for EVERYTHING. Supplements. Workouts. Eating. Drugs. Rest. Everything. He knows cheats, too. He knows every little shortcut bodybuilders take to get more weight on the bar and more reps. I found a dozen different things I was doing that I didn't even know were cheats. That's worth the price of the book alone. Oh, and a word to the wise for beginners: This isn't one of those silly "Grow 40 pounds of Muscle in 40 Days" books. I've been locked into the Colker EME Way for nine months now. I've put on maybe 7, 8 pounds of muscle, lost two inches on my waist, and MY CALVES ARE BANGIN! Slow and steady does it, baby! This book is the real deal!

This is another lesson for me: do not purchase a book based on the editorial reviews. I was trying hard to find promised "secrets of the bodybuilding legends", all in vain. The book offers absolutely nothing new, and its content is more suitable for article from popular magazines, not the text claiming to be a comprehensive work on building muscle. More useful and detailed info can be found on the web, for free.
Section on nutrition is strange. There is no recommendations regarding caloric intake for gaining mass or losing fat. No explanations how to estimate the caloric needs. The author is the proponent of low-carb eating but does not mention the role of carbs in exercise or carb cycling diets. But this aside, the chapter just does not give you any detals about proper eating, plain and simple. The section on post-workout nutrition has the same problem: how much carbs, how much protein, how much of anything?! Strangely, there is no mention of PRE-workout nutrition. In the section on training as you age the author gives some advise on how to keep your fat levels low: your diet must be clean and you should avoid ice-cream and burgers. "Clean"? Are you kidding me? Added to it are the usual - and wrong - statements on nutrition: eat small portions during the day, don't eat before going to bed. The section on training routines is not better. No mention of great exercises such as deadlift, weighted pullups, weighted dips. No mention of periodization, waving weights or repetitions. The rest of the book is the same. There is some good advise but it is lost in otherwise empty and trivial text. Quick Internet search will bring better result. From the hype surrounding the book I expected much more. I cannot recommend this book to anyone except maybe someone absolutely uninitiated.

This book isn't a bad read, I was thinking there was going to be more tips and tricks that pro bodybuilders use that the general person does not know about. If you been around bodybuilding long enough, you know the majority of diet and training that is in this book. I did however learn some things reading it. I learned his approach to sodium reducing, carbing up and valuable supplement information. It was a good read overall, and worth it. If you're new to the bodybuilding game, I would definitely pick up the book. If you been around awhile, the diet and training parts won't be much help but the rest of the book is worth the read.

Extreme Muscle Enhancement = Excellent!,
This review is from: Extreme Muscle Enhancement 2nd Edition (Paperback)
This book is full of excellent information from a person who is not only qualified by his education, but also by the fact that he is an avid bodybuilder himself. He pulls no punches and leaves it to you to decide what works best for you. I really learned a lot from this and I've been lifting for more than 15 years. I hope others get as much out of this as I have.

I have been lifting over 20 plus years, and read a few books on the subject, but none as informative as this book. This book is incredibly informative, it doesn't waste time with a bunch of useless information like how to do a certain movements, but it gives terrific insights into how to structure a work-out, when to work out, nutrition, supplements, and other enhancements.
The thing that I like is it's written by an M. D. who is also a dedicated bodybuilder. I would highly recommend this book to any bodybuilder's library.

The first edition was good but this new one is much much better. It provides great detail on proper training, including specific exercises/workouts. And unlike other books on the subject, it really emphasizes the importance of dieting and includes greatly detailed information on how to eat for gaining muscle. I wouldn't mind seeing some more info on supplements but the thoroughness on the training and diet information makes up for it. All in all, an excellent read and highly recommended.

I purchased this book after much time of a bit of intimidation. I am new to the "healthy lifestyle" but like what I saw in Doc from "Shaq's Big Challenge". I have read some other stuff by him and thought him to be trustworthy. I thought the book may be a bit over me and only for people competing, but it really is not. For me it seems to have a great deal of good info for the building blocks to a healthy life.
I am about 1/2 way into the book and have gotten a great deal from it. I find it very easy to digest and easy to understand. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to get a better understanding on your body as it relates to nutrition, weight training and supplements. Good job Doc, I can't wait to finish and apply all my new found knowledge.
