Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Adult/High School–If the words "extreme sports" bring to mind only the basics like skateboarding and snowboarding, think again. Here, sports range all the way to "mega-extreme" sports such as sky flying, caving, and free-diving. The book is divided into categories of air, land, and water, each of which profiles a variety of sports from the everyday to the almost totally unfamiliar. Each entry ranges from 2 to 10 pages and recounts the history of the sport as well as some of the greats who have competed. When appropriate, hints are given for how to participate locally. But this book isn't a "How to" as much as a "How can it be?" In many of the entries, the basic physics of the sport are briefly explained–how a bungee cord works, for example, or why innovations such as lighter metals helped advance biking sports. Rather than this brief text, however, it's the action photography that's the book's real attraction. Each spread has multiple full-color photographs. Reluctant readers will be drawn in by the pictures and teachers can also find classroom connections for the physics, invention, and engineering that keep these sports ever extreme.–Jamie Watson, Harford County Public Library, MD
