5.0 out of 5 stars Extreme Teen Bible: revised
The following review [[in brackets]] was written for the ORIGINAL edition, not for the revised version. It is more accurate for the ORIGINAL version. 2.0 out of 5 stars BIG shock!
When I first heard about the Extreme Teen Bible, I went straight to Google to look for it. Well, let me tell you something: When you type "extreme teen" into Google, you do NOT get anything about the Bible! I was so shocked that I forgot all about Jesus for about 11 minutes. I really don't think any Bible that puts the words "extreme" and "teen" in the same sentence is...

The following review [[in brackets]] was written for the ORIGINAL edition, not for the revised version. It is more accurate for the ORIGINAL version. [[ I am not usually impressed by Bibles that are geared to some gimmick or other, and I thought the same about this one before I looked inside. Fortunately, I DID look inside. While shopping for a confirmation present for a teenager in my parish, this became a consideration. Not only is it attractively formatted, very well-bound, and a relatively good translation (not the best, yet acceptable in this kind of Bible), it is also studded with bits of information, graphics, biographies, etc, I would have LOVED to have had in a Bible at this age! VERY impressive, and almost guaranteed to have an adolescent spending quality time with it right into adulthood! Definitely a Bible they can come to love, and take with them wherever they go in life!]] The new revised version has toned down some of the graphics features, and though it is in a smaller more personal size, which some will like, it is also less visually striking in some ways. I suspect teens will prefer the original edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully-formatted version, March 27, 2007
By
FekketCantenel (Fayetteville, Arkansas) - See all my reviews
Original Content: (5/5) This is the New King James Version, a slightly-revised translation that replaces the "thee"s and "thou"s. This makes it much easier to read, yet closer to the original than the paraphrased versions such as the NIV or NLT.

Added Content: (5/5) Each book begins with a short introduction, and an outline of the content (example from Joshua: "1:1-9 ... Joshua Becomes the Leader of Israel" "1:10-6:27 ... Israel Crosses the Jordan River and Conquers Jericho").

There are also many pretty, blue-bordered boxes in the text itself (with headers like "What's it mean?" (useful facts), "Promise" (text pointing out a promise made by God), and "On the Edge" (stories illustrating the text... these are occasionally a little simplistic and condescending).

As the summary states, there are some "Cutting Edge" insert pages with profiles of people (including such icons as Caleb, Samson, and Ruth). The text on these can be a little hard-to-read, as the backgrounds are sometimes noisy (Caleb's, for example).

Finally, the text is _littered_ with tiny boxes with thought-provoking questions (example: near 1 Samuel 7:3 is a box that asks, "How does following truth help us?"). These would be very helpful if you planned to read through the Bible while journalling and taking notes.

Layout/Font: (4/5) The Scripture's actual text is small, and not recommended for sight-impaired readers (unless you have a reading glass handy). The chapter numbers are hidden behind the text in a space-saving but slightly hard-to-spot way. The verse numbers are extremely tiny and superscripted.

Each page's header contains the page number, the book name (in an odd, outlined font that is sometimes hard-to-read), and the verse it begins (left page) or ends (right page) on.

Materials: (4/5) I have the hardcover version with a blue-and-black cover. It is durable and beautiful.

The paper itself, however, is thin (like some Gideon versions you might have come across), and I worry sometimes about ripping it as I turn the page. For the price, this is good, but if you tend to get rough with books as you're reading them, you might want to try and find one with thicker paper.

Extras: (5/5) This book also contains a topic index (in the front) and several 'read through the Bible' reading plans (in the back). You might find the same things (and much more extensive) online, but it's handy to have them included.

Overall: (4.5/5) Other than the small font, thin paper, and occasionally condescending extras (what else should I expect from a teen-targeted book?), this is an EXCELLENT product. I bought this copy as a gift for my brother, but now I think I'll be getting one of my own.

This Bible hits right at the core just like the KJV Bible does. This is a great Bible.

my only problem is the fancy font. i can't read the parts that have the crazy fancy font. otherwise it will do more good for my niece and nephew than a regular KJV Bible.

I bought this bible for my teen. It came highly recommended by missionary friends. I really do not know any more about it. Might be a good "handbook" to look at for teens searching for something solid.
