Book Description

May 3, 2011 Starfire (Book 6)
Once before, the sentient races in the known part of the galaxy—humans, Orions, Ophiuchi and Gorm—had united to defeat alien invaders. Decades later, the member planets of the alliance had grown complacent—until a huge fleet of ships, each ship larger than a city, arrived, fleeing the loss of their home planet when their star went nova.

They have traveled for centuries, slower than light, and now that they have arrived at the world they intend to make their new home. They regard the fact that the planet is already colonized by humans as a mere inconvenience, the more so since their mode of communication is so different from anything humans use that they do not consider humans and their allies to be truly intelligent. And the arriving aliens know—or, at least, they believe—that when they die they will be reincarnated, so they do not hesitate to attack humans and their allies with suicidal fury. And, if necessary, they will exterminate all humans and their allies, if that’s what it takes to occupy the planet.

That was their attitude on arrival, but the conquerors have learned from human technology. They now know all about reactionless drives, so much more efficient than rocket engines. And they have learned about the jump points which make faster-than-light travel possible. With that knowledge, they plan to conquer the entire inhabited region of the galaxy—unless the old alliance of humans and other being can stop them . . . .

About the Author

Steve White completed a tour of duty in Vietnam as a Naval officer. His SF adventure trilogy for Baen comprising The Disinherited, Legacy, and Debt of Ages was highly successful, as was Prince of Sunset, and its sequel Emperor of Dawn. His most recent books for Baen were the epic fantasy Demon’s Gate and the science fiction adventure novel Blood of the Heroes.

Charles E. Gannon is a breakthrough rising star in science fiction with a multiple short story and novella publications in Baen anthologies, Man-Kzin Wars XIII, Analog, and elsewhere. Gannon is coauthor with Steve White of Extremis, the latest entry in the legendary Starfire series created by David Weber. His most recent novel is 1635: The Papal Stakes cowritten with alternate history master, Eric Flint. A multiple Fulbright scholar, Gannon is Distinguished Professor of American Literature at St. Bonaventure University.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as his other books July 12, 2011
Format:Hardcover
Having read all the other books in this series, I have to say that this isn't his best work. Maybe it has something to do with his co-authors or something. But if you have read "in deaths ground" and/ or "the shiva option" or heck even crusade or insurrection, you will notice something is just missing in this book and its prequil "exodus" Now if you are a fan of the series it is a must read and it does hint at upcoming books that will hopefully bring us back to the quality of his earlier books.

Steve White started out the book with a ... so... so... covert ops mission , and then hands the book over to this guy who doesn't know ANYTHING about tactical situations. He writes as if he's of a foreign county back in the dark ages and constructs senesces backwards like Yoda. Mostly gibberish that you have to read twice to understand. The Space Battles are an afterthought , with nothing of interest. Like : The SD.s was hit by a heat laser , damaged it was , and two monitors were destroyed" None of in depth space battle details whatsoever , and certainly none of the edge of the seat reading. I had to go back a few times and look to see if I missed something.. Where did the action go? It's over already!?.... The aliens were not described well , and called Baldies? And the Main Captain's name was long and gibberish sounding that I had to call her something else every time I read her name. Sadly , this book is an insult to the Starfire series. Enough Said..

5.0 out of 5 stars Much better than Exodus May 13, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Ok, there is sharp difference in this book versus the first book in this two-parter.. Exodus was a bore, plain and simple! This book moves from the begining and actually makes you want to read it and not put it down, the characters are much better defined and battles a bit richer in detail. All-in-all a welcome a new addition to the Starfire universe. Much congratulations to Gannon and the improvements he made to this series!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book. Glad he finally finished the series.
This is a good book that finally finishes from its prequel Exodus. I liked it good character development on both sides and way it tied up the story.
